Wheel warranty claim or not?

I'd say that was a warranty job. If they won't play ball do a chargeback on your credit card.

Fortunately it looks like the manufacturer are being sensible where those with the obligation to you are not.

Now send it back to the supplier with a copy if the manufacturer's email demanding a full refund. And then go buy yourself some decent wheels.

As a matter of interest: What was the manuf's 'plausible cause' for the premature fail?

Mrs SG is pretty lousy when it comes to cleaning her community bike. Manufacturer, after looking at some macro shots I took of multiple parts of the wheel said that it appears road salt has gotten through the eyelets onto the heads of the nipples and not been cleaned allowing premature corrosion. I know in very late March one local council was flinging salt down at an alarming rate on the merest hint temperatures might fall, even though it ended up at 5 or 6 degrees! Some very slight salt residue was evident on the underside of the rim tape when I took it off.

I have been through two winters on a set of these wheels without issue (until I got hit by a car so they now resemble Pringles but no broken spokes!) and I know several others with the same experience.

Thank you for your offer but at the price point these wheels are sold they are (normally) excellent value for money. As I said my wife and her last or cleaning probably didn't help the situation.

I am happy for them to be rebuilt with brass and will most likely get the other two sets I own done at some point too my a part time wheelbuilder I know.

Really? Either you're being economical with your information or you're a true Brit I just cannot see how a 2 month old bike (wheel) can be failing due to road salt whatever the cleaning schedule it had.

Yes it shouldn't happen on wheels that knew but I feel the manufacturer are being reasonable so no point in forcing the issue further. I feel my time is worth a bit more than a small shipping fee.

I did try that line and was basically told they didn't care. As I said their manner on the phone was that they simply didn't care. One thing for sure is I wont be buying from them again.

I was going on information I had at that time. Talking to Mrs SG last night she conceded that she may have done so as she cannot remember 100% the exact date the wheels went on the bike, only within 10 days or so.

I ride in the complete opposite direction to her in another council area so can only go on what she tells me.

When I later looked again, very closely, at the inside of the rim tape there is small signs of white stuff that is either salt or oxidised metal. I don't plan tasting it to find out for sure.

Salt not only causing a spoke nipple to fail, but to fail so quickly. What a load of bull.

And if it were true, how are wheels that fail when used in British environmental conditions fit for purpose? I'm with Mickle, they've inadvertently stitched themselves up with that. Print it off and back to the seller.
