I'd advise not doing the finger etc, at least not routinely

I was twice attacked after doing that, one car went up the pavement to chase me, once he got out his car after passing me and punched me

I'm sure we've all read stories in the papers

Best to let it go or as others say, keep it civil

The very same thing happened to me tonight. I was riding in a sensible position to avoid parked cars on a narrow road, and a car beeped.

When I told the man to eff off the car screeched to a halt and a man the size of a house got out. I decided to hang a sharp left and avoid the inevitable trouble.

I have come to the unerring conclusion that we are a nation of selfish control freaks with chips on our shoulders. IMO large section of people think their way is the only way and everyone else should be doing what they are doing, thinking what they are thinking, wearing what they are wearing etc. It wouldn't occur to the average motorist that cycling is an enjoyable, great, efficient and fast way of getting about. And yes I am a motorist and, unfortunately, have to drive most days.

Your average motorist drives like they can't wait to get out of their vehicle. Any obstacle in their way is something to get past as quickly as possible in the haste to get to the next set of lights. This includes getting past cyclists. It probably doesn't occur to them that for each cyclist there is one less car in front of them at the lights, which = less queueing = cyclists ARE the motorists' friend.

The fact is there is very little road space. The roads are full to bursting. The pace of life is frenetic and lets face it, driving isn't fun. It certainly isn't cheap. It isn't fun sitting in queues to and from work during the week. Nor in the shopping areas at weekend. That dream of getting your licence and being free with the open road in front of you is a hollow promise and a cruel hoax. If you want that, get a bike!

It would seem a large section of motorists hate having to share the road with anyone let alone the comparatively slow cyclist.

It is amazing how getting behind the wheel turns normally reasonable people into obnoxious grumps and all too often, dangerous, obnoxious grumps.

Drivers in this country are pretty poorly educated with regards to driving and believe that the car is king. That perception has to be changed. Speeding for instance. The howls and cries when another speed camera goes up always amazes me. Speeding is not a right, it is actually against the law!! Don't speed and you won't get fined. And if you get fined then you can have no quarrel! Stop being a victim and take personal responsibility!

I don't like to inconvenience anybody and don't like holding people up, but I do have the right to ride my bike on the road in peace and without harassment. It is perfectly legal so I don't appreciate being tooted and won't be bullied. Just as I won't be harried into doing the seemingly obligatory 40mph on 30mph roads when driving. I don't rush and won't be rushed – especially not by the type of person who makes the roads unpleasant for everybody else. Life becomes a hamster wheel with that mindset.

I really think the perception of having a license has to change. It has to seen as a privilege rather than a right. Anti-social driving should be cracked down on in a massive way. For me the car is only good for getting the shopping home once a week.

There's room for all.

Good first post mm101,.

I think the horn is just used far too much. I've never used the horn as a motorist, I just don't see the point in many situations when people routinely honk.

It always amuses me when I get honked on a dual carriageway when the other lane is completely empty. How stupid and sad do you have to be to honk someone that there is an entire lane to my right where you can overtake at whatever speed you want with ease.

I've given up on the middle finger after a van driver deliberately tried to ram me off the road, this after a ridiculously close overtake. I just shake my head and wag my finger at them now - clear but polite disapproval and I retain the high ground.

I can't remember the last time I got honked. Literally. And I ride 15 miles a day on some of London's gnarliest roads.

Might this have something to do with 40 years' experience, gaining a gut feel for avoiding honkable situations?

Not that I'm excusing honking...I just see quite a lot of cyclists kind of asking for it with their lack of awareness of things like positioning and others on the road. I see way too little glancing-over-the-shoulder, clear signalling of intentions, grasp of other road users' likely behaviour...stuff like that.

Like I say, I'm not in any way excusing much less condoning aggressive/moronic honking...just saying some cyclists do themselves no favours.

No one is asking to be honked in the sort of situations we are concerned with, it is an attitude problem in the brains of the honkees and nothing more. I think the horn is used way too much in this country, in general, even taking cyclists out of the equation entirely.

I don't think the horn is used too much, just used too often in the wrong situation. I bet most people have used their horn once or twice in their driving life time to stop someone pulling into them/etc...but have used it 10s of times to tell people off...another load of times to tell people 'i'm waiting outside'.....

That is the one that gets me the most ... MrsT does that everytime she come home.

For some, as in the scummies that live further up the street, it is their preferred means of communication. Scummie snr pulls his scum wagon onto their drive and before he's off the road he's hit 3 long blasts of his horn to Mrs Scummie and all the little scummy jnrs. And there are a lot of them. And leaving is even worse about 5 blasts on the hooter every time. Sometimes this happens 5 or 6 times on a saturday after noon as they are constantly coming and going and also at 8am on a sunday morning .
