I hadn't seen that footage before. Crackers!

I like the phrase "They didn't fly but they showed flying characteristics...." followed by "they fell over during testing..."

I liked: "I've concentrated more on the mechanical side of things rather than the aerodynamics".

But it's not all wacky; 'deltas' on the rotor tips are used on the Lynx and contrarotating rotors on the Chinook.

From my memory of 'riding' it, the wackiness wasn't stuff like the deltas (not on it when I tried it), but the fact that the frame appeared to be made out of wrought iron. Perhaps that was what they requisitioned those railings for in WW2....

I have no idea what possessed him to put the pilot on top though. I got vertigo just standing on it, and was delighted that there wasn't the slightest chance of it taking off!

Is the Raymond Baxter? How could he take that contraption seriously? Surely anybody with half a brain would recognise it as hopeless?

No, not Raymond Baxter. I think the programme is a bit home made.

Yellow Fang - well, why not try eh? Hiram Maxim's steam aeroplane crashed on its first attempt when it came off its rails, but I'm jolly glad he tried, just so that we can say there was once a steam aeroplane...

I don't know if it's utterly impossible - the problem is to get the weight (including the pilot) low enough, but the power high enough. So you need a very powerful, small person, and a rig that weighs virtually nothing. If a hovercraft can be done (and it has)...
