I'm using Corel Video Studio 12. Its not ideal but imports a lot of different video types. Its essentially Windows Moviemaker but with a couple of added features (titles, screen grab, picture drawing)
I'm on a Mac so looking for something that is quick for adding captions etc.

Nice timing gaz - I've just now been checking out the new features in iMovie 11. It seems to have addressed most of the issues I'd found problematic before so, having used MediaEdit for a bit, I may well return to it.

Ordered one today (dogcam bullet camera and 32gb microSD from Amazon. Why? Was on my Boardman today cycling into peaks when an Audi A1 drew close beside me and a passenger screamed into my ear and then it sped off with the passenger flicking "V's". I got the reg and have reported them to South Yorkshire Police. Suspect they may not do anything but I would like to have had the video. The bullet cam only weighs 32g.

do you have a youtube channel?

I didn't even know what a YouTube channel is until I Googled it just now. I guess I must have; I have a YouTube account, and here's my very first YouTube video; a montage showing 2 mountain descents on the Audax Alpine Classic 200km bike ride, held in Australia's Victorian Alps a month ago:

I do need to work out the least painful way to embed subtitles/captions, though. I'm using MPEG Streamclip to clip and export the recordings, but would like to add captions.

Youtube has its own software where you can add annotation, subtitles, etc. Go to the videos page, theres a little box marked "insight" with a down arrow menu button next to it, click that then "annotations" and it takes you there. Youtube has some how-to vids on it also.

I bougth the first camera in may 2009 but it wasn't good. I have another since jan 2010.
I read a story about a simple accident, the cyclist couldn't prove something, that's why I bought it...

Thanks for the tip, mate!. I used the annotation feature on one of the videos, and it was fairly straightforward.

Since you went to the trouble of subscribing to my YouTube page, I guess I'll have to post a few more videos. I have several I recorded last year which I haven't posted yet.

Sorry, mate, my mistake, I thought you were the YouTube user "downfader2", who also seems to use a bicycle helmet-cam.

I am considering taking my first foray into helmet cams for commuting. I am unsure if it is the thing for me so I'd like to spend as little as possible to get me started, I will re-assess after a few weeks and go from there.

I had seen the camera from 7DayShop mentioned on here as a possible choice. The CMOS sensor isn't that good, but it can't be any worse than the MD80 clones' sensors can it? Is there a way to helmet mount the unit at all? I don't like the idea of a handlebar mount and I'd prefer something to show my looks over the shoulder .etc

It isn't a bad price ATM, £17 delivered with a 4 gb micro SD card.

That's the one I had, but it stopped recharging after only a few days. Before it died I was quite happy with it: video quality is amazing for the money, but there was a horrible rattle on the audio that I couldn't get rid of.

BTW, can't praise 7dayshop enough for how they handled my refund. They immediately replied to my enquiry with a freepost address to send it back to, and within a week they'd put the refund through.
