In between here and there
Is that average moving time and speed? Or total time and speed? Either way going to Redhill to North London @ 18mph is VERY good going.

I found on the days where I made a more steady approach rather than go hell for leather there was not much time differrence, what I worked ou was my legs were tired earlier as they had not warmed up.

Wind is the single biggest factor for me, then traffic lights, but to be honest mate, I think that at 5 days a week, at 22 each way in just over an hour at 18 mph, is something to be extremely proud of, thats real man cycling !!

It's not a good idea to chase your time every day. You will get tired and discouraged. Forget the times and just enjoy the cycle. Maybe once a month you can go for it when you are feeling good and conditions are right. That's a long commute by most standards and you'll find that taking it relatively easy will only cost a minute or two, but should leave you fresher mentally and physically.

I find that cycling up hills increases the amount of force your legs get used to and therefore increases the amount of power you are actually putting down on the roads.
Try going up some hills in your spare time and you will soon see the speeds increasing.
