If you can share silent time with someone and not feel uncomfortable with it, youve found good company.

No idea what your point is but they're classed as shy and introverted so they seem to think it's okay to come round here, eat and drink and expect me to start all the conversations.
They call it 'shy' - I'm inclined towards 'rudeness'.

Very rude. What do they get out of this ? Can't be 'fun' ?

I don't have the same interests as one of my BIL's, but the one thing that gets things going is about his Ducati - it's a very nice tourer. Me into pedal bikes helps... The fact that he does accounts for folks, and runs his own business, and the fact I am an accountant - we never talk shop as I'm the qualified one that doesn't talk work ! - Bores me.

We both try, but talking about his bike is both interesting to me and he loves it too.

My other BIL's (and a possibly to be BIL) I don't have any issues getting on with - all very social, and neither goes near any 'real' exercise, but both my age or younger, but they are with my sisters.

The one that's 'harder work' is married to my wife's much older sister (10 years) so possibly a generation gap, but I'm OK with my youngest sisters fella, and he's 14 years younger than me ?

Personalities don't always mix though.

Someone told me that in Finland it is quite common for there to be periods of silence during dinner parties that last for several minutes. Sounds a bit like a Quaker Meeting. Is it true?

Yep, true.

Mika and Pekka hadn't seen each other for ages, so they decided to get together for "one" beer. At the end of the first pint Pekka says
"How have you been?" Mika just grunts in reply.
At the end of the second pint Pekka asks
"So how's your family?" Again, Mika just grunts in reply.
After three pints Pekka asks
"How's work going?" Mika turns in fury and yells
"Perkele! Did we come here to talk or drink?!"

Given that I've known these people for 40 years and 25 years respectively you'd think that they could initiate one conversation in 3 hours.
My wife sympathises but says that they're just shy. To me it verges on pig-ignorance or at the very least laziness. Ah well!

But you're just a lowly cyclist. ;) Why on earth would they want to converse with you?

They probably view you as something like this:
