Here for rides.
Never been before. Here until Saturday night. Lots of free time; all day, all night, in point of fact.

What should I do? What's unmissable? What's utterly overrated?

The Vatican and museum are a must see, its an eye opener. The ancient stuff didn't interest me much and most food is overpriced to fleece tourists. Trevi fountain is worth seeing once but watch out for the beggars they're everywhere.

We were in Rome a couple of years ago.
Enjoyed a bus tour to get our bearings and see the city and it's amazing architecture.
Thought the Vatican was disappointing, too crowded and rushed.
Colosseum is impressive but found it a bit boring inside.
Villa Borghese, museum and gallery in landscaped grounds is worth a visit.
Trevi Fountain is beautiful but was being renovated and no water in it when we were there.
Went walkabout one day and ended up in the Protestant Cemetary, very peaceful and Keats and Shelley buried there. Interesting and quite a few cats roaming about, they are fed and cared for.
Found food too salty and overpriced, watch out for thieves .

There's only one attraction worth visiting - the Pantheon. Everything else was underwhelming. The Sistine Chapel - I was freized out by the time I reached it.

There was good pizza nearby, can't recall the name unfortunately! Indeed my Italian being better than the rest of the group was not all that and we ended up with 7 pizzas for 6 people, demolished the lot and drank tnem dry of beer! :hungry::cheers:

I'd kind of just wander around enjoying the sites, keeping your valuables out of site

I seem to recall some very good ice cream could be had around the place :hungry:

Ostia Antica is worth a visit - it's out of the city but you can get there by metro/train.

Coming back from there some years ago, we got out at the station near the Colosseum, which turned out to be closed. The whole area was deserted. As we tried to read the notice as to why, a load of dark-screened cars screeched to a halt right by us, various men in black got out and politely moved us a few yards away from the entrance. A few seconds later, another motorcade turned up, but only one person got out and was escorted through the gate. It was the Japanese emperor arriving for his personal visit. A bit wierd as we were the only other people around and we kept looking for the (non-existent) barriers that we must have crossed to be right by him.

We went on a private tour round of he Vatican museum. That got us past the cues and very knowledgeable guide.
Also picked up a tour around the colloseum with a British guide.
Other than that went on the Red tour bus. You an hop off and back on at different touristy areas.
GF found the holy water in the first church we went in cured her earache (she gets pain from the pressure increase at landing).

The crypt at St Peters. When I was there, a lot of people were still very distressed by the loss of John Paul II so it was quite an emotional place.

I just tended to wander around the rest of the place and spent a lot of time just people watching on the Piazza Navona. You can usually count on something: wedding; police chase; people making a film about a wedding involving a police chase...

Oh the Palatine Hill is worth a look, I think it was included in the Colosseum ticket when I went. There's lots of little ruins and nooks up there with great views over the forum and Circo Massimo
