Carlisle ... like it. Moved up here from Nottingham 8 year ago and never looked back

2miles from the city centre and 200m from open countryside
Lakes District, Eden Valley, North Pennines, Hadrian's Wall, Borders and Solway Coast all within very easy reach
Locals are very friendly, but the flaky incomer segment who think lentils humus are staple food less so
The city itself has pretty much everything I need, but remains a backwater of England.
Great culture and tons of historical interest.
Home of the superb curly sausage

Hayfield, Peak District.

Massive outdoor scene, on/off road cycling, fell running, walking etc
My neighbours are all great
My wife's a local business owner & pillar of the community
Kids are settled in school & doing well
I get to sleep in a real bed for a few days every week when I'm not working at Heathrow

On the downside, none of the village grownups (Parish Council, Borough Council, school governors, Highways Authority etc etc you know the sort) cared enough about a new housing development creating a blind junction NEXT TO THE SCHOOL ENTRANCE to put a stop to it.

I live in Watford. It's better than might be expected- except that some ***** are going to build on my allotment.

There's good cycling nearby, there's plenty of racing within riding distance, the shops and that are close so I don't need a car- or even a bike for most shopping, it's exactly 10 miles from work which is just the right distance to commute by bike, there's a tube station just down the road, there's a reasonable rehearsal studio pretty close, good park and woods 5 mins walk, know a fair few people.

I could do with a bigger flat but I like being close to London even though I don't need to be.

Orpington, SE London/Kent
Not my first choice of abode but it's where my wife want's to live as it's where her family live.
I am a South West London lad so would prefer to live there. But there is a huge difference in the cost of housing between South West and South East.

However, having been in Orpington for the last 16 years I have grown to like it. But will move when the opportunity arises. It's just too white, middle class, suburban hell for me.

What's good about it.
It's very green.
It's 15 miles to the West End with great road, rail and bus links.
The wonderful Kent countryside is on the doorstep. 5 minutes for me.
It has a great selection of restaurants including a Michelin Star one.
The local pubs are rather much muchness. Some very poor chav havens, some run of the mill dives and a couple of really good ones serving some great real ales.
Have 1 Bike shop, who are really good and willing to do that little extra for you.
Some very good ofsted rated schools.
Is that really good chinese resturant still there ? think it was Xi Zan or something like it

West Somerset, where I'm spoiled for choice as far as cycling is concerned. I'm surrounded by some amazing and varied countryside in all directions: the Quantock Hills, the Brendon Hills and Exmoor, the Blackdown Hills, Devon, Dorset, and the Somerset Levels and Moors all right on my doorstep or within easy reach by bike. My local village has got some excellent services, including a superb butcher's. And my landlords are brilliant and regularly dog sit for me when I go off gallivanting on the bike.

On the downside, Taunton is a dump (I saw today that even the pawnbroker's is having a closing down sale) and the disease of horribly-coloured, sardine-tin, identikit housing developments has got a stranglehold on the county.

It's brilliant with more pubs, bistros and bars than any other UK city.

Great night life and transport links.

London, is there really anywhere else.

I reckon you havent lived here enough yet ^_^

I'll miss

Gioberti's in Wanstead

My sis moved there. Sez it's 'like Croydon without the glamour'. Last time I mentioned that, someone here posted that their sis calls it Basinggrad.

Yes, that would have been me....

I'm in York, and it's lovely, City life, in a town sized place, lots of cyclists, flat, countryside within 10 minutes, lots going on, pretty views etc.

But once the house is finished, I'll be moving to Manchester to be with NT. Different, but I'm sure I'll like it just as much. A bit less cycle friendly, until I get to grips with it, and of course a much, much bigger city, but that means loads going on, and all the various districts are like towns in themselves, just like in London. Home is where the heart is, and all that.

I live in the North of Newcastle

Good
Northumberland countryside on my doorstep
15 minutes from the City Centre
Quiet
Nice neighbours
Airports, motorways and train stations at easy reach

Bad
Anfield is three hours away

As this but just east of central Newcastle.
Good as above

Bad:
Sunderland and Newcastle football too close - bloomin' game shoud be banned

62 years is quite a while. ^_^

I would miss walking along the south bank after a trip to the theatre and having a beer/meal.

Drinking around Shoreditch on a Friday night.

Bands at the O2 and other Lodon venues.

Cycling out towards Epping

Catching the last train, the vomit comet home from Liverpool Street after a good drink and a visit to Brick Lane.

As arch says, I am in a part of Greater Manchester where I have a huge house and a great view of mostly trees, grass and flowers.

Not as nice as York in many respects but far more affordable.
