When I got my first watch I was told to wear it on my left wrist, and I still believe that this is the right and proper way to go about such a thing.

Whenever I see someone with it on their right wrist I assume that person must be some kind of loon or, at best, simply ignorant of what is proper.

Perhaps a poll will enable us to see what the situation is at the 'grassroots'...

Couldn't agree more.
Wearing on the right, just seems to be for people desperate to be "trendy" or somthing. Usually cheap plastic Casio calculator type things too.

Or they are left handed and find it easier to put on their right wrist, with their left hand??

NB. I wear mine on the left - not like these right-wrist-watch-wearin' freaks!!

That would assume the use of a buckle as the fastening mechanism. Sinister folk with a clasp or, woe betide, an elasticated strap ought still to sport it upon their left wrist.

Was it not something to do with holding your drink in your dominant hand, thereby wearing your watch on the opposite wrist allowed you to check the time without spilling the drink?

I always where my watch on my right wrist. As a leftie it makes perfect sense and feels correct. My watch has a clasp and is a discreet but rather nice certified chronometer.

Since I've retired, five years ago. I have worn my wrist watch exactly 3 times, on my left wrist. I own a pocket watch which hangs on my belt loop and sit in my trouser pocket. I've used that on holiday and very, very occasionally at other times, if I had an appointment to keep.

I spent my working life conforming to the clock in one way or another and it's now a time I can choose to do what I want, when I want.

The poll has no category for me as altho' I own a watch I haven't worn it for years. My phone has the time on it and so the watch is redundant.

Even the last added option is not relevant as I have a keen interest in antiquarian horology and own a clock that was made in London between 1690 to 1695. It still runs perfectly although it is of a design whose time-keeping was never that accurate (verge escapement, if you are interested).

I always wear a watch for work on left hand but never wear it when cycling. When on the bike, if I need to know the time, I flick to clock on computer even though it's set for GMT (UTC if you insist Johnny Foreigner) and I've misplaced the instructions how to change it

Going away on my hols tomorrow. I'll need watch to check ferry and plane times but might get away without it for best part of 2 weeks

The left wrist is the only way. Watches have the bezel on the right side so that you can access it with your right hand whilst still wearing it on the left wrist. If you wear it on the right wrist it is very hard to access the bezel with your left hand.

ps I feel naked without a watch on.

As a leftie myself my uncle-a watch repairer- told me to wear any decent wristwatch on the left hand, because they are adjusted to spend most of their time with the winder pointing downwards.
Anyway in most of the jobs I have had, turner, tree-feller, it has made more sense to have a open-faced pocket watch, either hanging on a convenient screw or in the left breast pocket.

I'm right handed and wear a watch on my right wrist.

When I was a teen I had sensitive skin and would react to most watch straps within a couple of days, so I used to alternate which wrist I wore my watch on every day - eventually my skin settled down and my watch just happened to be on the right wrist when I stopped alternating!

Don't wear a watch. I used to but I was forever damaging it or snagging the strap and breaking it so for 20 years or so I have done without. I have a couple of very nice watches but never wear them.

I used to wear it on the left wrist though. I am right handed.

Used to wear a watch (digital). Eventually got fed up with the straps breaking so quickly and the pins coming out. A few years later someone bought me a proper watch, same thing happened with those straps. Stopped wearing watches completely. Use my speedometer clock at work to check the time. I think it's a good thing on the whole, I used to nervously check my watch for the time about every 2 minutes when I had a digital watch. Life is much better off not relying on it. I used to wear it on the left wrist though.
