I don't want to use my bike on the turbo trainer over the winter. Any idea where I can get a good cheap bike that would be good for my turbo trainer? Don't cycle shops sell 2nd hand bikes?

It won't do it any harm. Just get an old QR for the rear wheel if you don't want to knacker the present one when locking it in the turbo mount. You will be sitting on the bike you will be riding out on the roads which has got to be better than sitting on some possibly stolen jalopy you got on Ebay, Gumtree or some one's pride and joy that was seized unlawfully by the police.

Where are you? In Stirling we have a wonderful shop called Recyke-A-Bike who kludge together good working bikes using scavenged parts from discarded/donated bikes.
Yesterday I picked up a lovely Monterrey Crusader mountain bike for £45 which I plan to use for commuting when the winter salt hits the road, thus saving my road bike. My previous mtb (got from them a few years ago) needed new tyres, new cables and probably a new front gear so I donated it to them at the same time.
I know of a similar place in London (http://www.re-cycling.co.uk) but can't comment on how good they are as I have never visited them.
You may be able to find such a place near you.

A question I'd been pondering and thnurg's post has meant that I'll be taking a quick 40 min trip up to Stirling in the next few days to check out recyke a bike! Re-cycling.co.uk looks like a good place to go if only it was a bit closer. :-)

AFAIK Stirling is a long way from Upwood in Cambridgeshire. Have you got use of a private jet by any chance such as a Tornado?

Excellent. Please let me know what you get, if anything, and your thoughts on recyke a bike. I know the guy who set it up. He's no longer with them but I still love doing business with them. I got a cracking bike for my 7 year old daughter at only £25 a couple of weeks ago.

Freecycle?
It might work to get one, but it's certainly not the place to get rid of bikes. We have tried several times to offer perfectly usable childrens bikes on freecycle. Generally the people we offered them to didn't even bother to turn up. One lot turned up, complained about the bike and left without it.
A much better way has been ebay with a 99p starting price. We put on two very similar bikes - one went for £5 and the other went for £28. At least the buyers came to collect them. The young boy with the £5 bike even left riding it and refused to go home with his father in the car.

I agree with trying to give things away on Freecycle/Freeshare/similar.
They used to be great, both to give items away and get stuff we needed.
Now it's full of "WANTED: XBOX360 must have games" and similar.
I tried to give my Peugoet bike away on Freecycle and no-one wanted it. In the end I stuck it on eBay and got £94 for it, with the buyer collecting the next day.

Our freecycle has no moderators and now people are asking money for items and if your lucky enough to get anything "free" it is generally falling to bits.I did get a full suss BSO that some one thought is an excellent bike even though it weighs a ton and needed an overhaul.Its not perfect but it will be reserved for those times when my other bike is in for repair or the weather is so cack i would not trust 23 mm slicks on the normal commuter.
Always seems that anything good is always gone asap as professional care booters are their before anyone else gets a look in, also seems to be a lot of " new home need everything "! posts .
