The adapter for my Acer laptop has died a random and inexplicable death. Luckily I've got the one from my previous laptop but want to get a new one, just in case. Any suggestions or recommendations of online retailers or should I go through the likes of PC World etc?

You can go to Ebay and buy a cheap Chinese one, or you can go to a computer shop and pay a bit more for a cheap Chinese one with a fancy label on it or you can buy a manufacturer's genuine one which will cost more but will be probably better quality for the extra it will cost.

Your money, your choice.

how old is the acer laptop - under a year and you can get a free one from Acer! but it will take a little time.
otherwise resist the temptation to purchase a £5 one off ebay and splash out with a £15 one - they have the potential to fry the motherboard if they blow (seen that one as well).

PS PSUs usually fail one the side of the transformer to the laptop - that connection, if you waggle it by your ear and can hear a clicking sound is the most common place of failure (used to work in a school that had 100's of them and say almost weekly failures in them at this point) but it is worth double checking the fuse if you have not already done so.

I got a replacement compaq transformer from Amazon. Around £12 if I remember correctly. I just typed in the make and model number and it came up.
