Where to mount a map holder...

It seems I have hit a snag on mounting a map holder to my bike, I stupidly didn't think that the cross-tops would get in the way. I would be looking to get one for long rides and tours so I can see where I am going without pulling an OS map out of my (damp!) jersey pocket and stopping every couple of minutes to do so. Has anyone got a suggestion bar dumping the maps and getting GPS.

I would also be interested on what type of maps people prefer for cycling. I normally use OS explorer but I think the scale may be too big for long rides which cover multiple maps areas. Maybe the Landranger series would be better suited.

IMO, the best maps are those you print out, they can cover the exact area you are riding and you can recycle them when you are finished with them.

As for mounting, you could try a Minoura Space Grip or Swing Grip, or the Topeak Bar X-Tender, the latter two being mountable on the stem as well as the bars.

Rixen-Kaul Mini map holder on the stem? Might have to use well folded road-atlas pages or audax stylee route-sheets rather than a big map.

or, if you use a bar bag with a map holder on the top - get one with a Rixen-Kaul bracket and use one of their extenders to put the bar bag far enough forward to clear the cross-top levers. ?

Some good suggestions for handlebar extensions, it just depends whether the extension can clear the inboard side of the bake lever where clearances between the bar and cable is tight.

I would interested to know where people download and print maps off from. I am used to plotting a route in Google Maps, memorizing important turn offs and following where I need to go with OS explorer maps. A little blow to using that with a mount though as I have discovered that a half-opened OS map (when you open the first fold and orientate it east-west) is wider than my bars!
