Have you looked at Planet-X? They still make the best-value road bikes in the UK (I have two, the old Kaffenback and a Stealth TT).

The 'Full Monty' is an incredible gravel bike for £799:

Or if you want to push it up to your maximum £999 gets you a full carbon-framed, hydraulic disc-braked, SRAM 22 speed 'XLS':

You are really not going to get better than that.

They both look great. Is there any difference in the type of bike they are? One is listed as a 'Gravel/Adventure' bike whilst the more expensive one is 'Cyclocross'.

I am very tempted by the latter but need quite a relaxed, upright, geometry.

You're almost asking for the impossible if you want a gravel bike and an upright geometry. You're right that the XLS is less relaxed. The Full Monty is more so (and there's also a higher specc'd version of that still under a grand), and one step more relaxed in terms of geometry is their do-it-all super-commuter / everything bike, the 'London Road':

But none of these are what I'd call upright.
