Looking to get back into cycling to help loose some weight and socialise more, I was wondering if anyone can recommend a decent bike suitable for someone who weighs around 150/155kg ?

I live near the coast so will be riding along cycle paths, light gravel cycle tracks or tarmac.

I have had a look online and really like the look of a hybrid or mountain bike. However I am concerns they may not be suitable for my weight.

I am currently looking at the following bikes but also open to suggestions. I have a budget up to £400-£500:

Opt 1
https://www.evanscycles.com/brand/trek/dual-sport-2-2021-hybrid-bike 934057#colcode=93405711

Opt 2
https://www.giant-southampton.co.uk/gb/escape-3-disc

I hope someone can help provide advice or recommend bikes in my budget that should be suitable for my weight.

Some bikes give a weight limit which you would exceed, but experience suggests most bikes will take a lot more than stated.

I believe when @39 stone cyclist Gaz, a member here, was riding he used an ordinary bike.

Hopefully he will be along to confirm.

Your Evans link is coming up as 'not found', but the Giant is the sort of bike that would be suitable.

The podgy tyres, with plenty of air in them, will help carry your weight.

A £500 mountain bike might be stronger, which you could run with shallow tread balloon tyres after you've worn out what it comes with.

Bikes are still in short supply, so it may come down to what you can get in your size.

Also look at the Carrera Subway 1 - chunky hybrid with tyres suitable for tarmac and a little off road - they are £300 or Subway 2 for £350

Gaz started out on his MTB, then moved to a lighter bike once he lost some weight.

Thank you you for your help. I found Gaz’s story online and I found it really inspiring, I have now invested in a new bike and I should be able to collect it next week and will then look forward to hitting the tarmac.

I started riding at about 160kg and used a cheap second hand fat bike.

Over the top perhaps, but i still ride it today with lots of weight lost and im far stronger in the legs.

It will always pay to make sure you keep the wheels true but again with the 4 inch wide wheels that are 26 inch i haven't had a single issue. Like Gaz (39 stone cyclist) i still make sure i don't drop off kerbs or smash into potholes etc which is wise advice. I would avoid suspension at all costs as im sure you're aware, my second hand one does and it's useless but does have a lock out which stops the suspension travel, which was nearly always bottomed out...

Good Luck.
