Is there anything I need to be aware before I buy a second hand bike except the size, what do I need to check

Everything  state of the tyres, that the brakes work, the gears change smoothly throughout the range at the back and can shift between the chainrings at the front and that there’s no slipping when you change gear and pedal, that the handlebars turn smoothly, that the seat post/saddle can be moved up and down smoothly, pedals turn smoothly, that there are no cracks or damage, especially to the forks if carbon…
Also ask the seller to show you a receipt for the bike and any work that’s been done by them or a shop, ask when the chain, cassette, tyres were last changed. You’ll want proof that it’s theirs to sell and not stolen!

The Specialised has lower gearing, so if you have much in the way of hills, is likely to be better for you.

It has 46/34 chainset and 11-34 cassette, while the Merlin has 50/34 and 11-28

Yep, it's rather hilly out that way, as this Fenland girl can attest, having cycled several times between Winchester and Alresford in some of her slightly more ambitious moments. So the lower the gearing, the better IMHO. Which quite frankly, a road bike won't have. I've done that route on a road bike and I've done it on a hybrid, and I know which one I'd much rather ride.

As a newbie to cycling, I would suggest the OP looks at hybrids with a triple instead as a starting point if all they plan on doing are leisure rides, as he / she ain't half going to need it. And then graduate to a roadie once they've a) stopped growing and b) got some hill miles in the legs.

I'd go look at the Specialized, It looks a nice bike, according to Spec's website the size should be bang on for you, test ride it make sure everything works as expected, gears go up and down with no skipping, tyres in good nick, no weird creaks or groans etc, most importantly, make sure it's the sellers bike to sell, it seems to be a business, so make a cheeky bid, it seems like a good do it all bike, which when you start to wear things out would be ripe for some nice upgrades

I'm just going by looks here but the Spesh looks nicer and that very much is a reason to buy it! It goes second behind user-fitting-the-bike.

Only if it’s been registered on a site like Bike Register.
Is he the first owner? If so, he should be able to get a copy of the receipt from the shop/his online account

Seems like there's 2 bikes for sale, maybe Covid specials, seems like he sells telephony equipment mainly.

So if he really doesn’t have receipt so I should not buy his bike?

Go see it and see what you think of him and the bike. If he said he’ll only need you in a pub carpark or similar I’d be wary. Can you take someone with you?
