Which Bike Lock?

Been looking around for a suitable bike lock that doesn't cost am arm & legs yet still offers better security.

I considered getting Kryptonite Kryptolock Twin Pack until I read the reviews that the keys works with other lock, so I backed off with the purchase.

What should I look for? Is an D lock good enough? Or should I get both D lock and cable (or chains) however they need to be light enough to be carried in my backbag. I'm looking to spend up to £35 or so.

D-Lock and Cable

For £35 theres various available, a Kryptonite Series 4 + Cable is about that I think if you look around.

Thanks, I had a look and I feel some of them were not a fair test. I think an D lock and a cable should be enough to put them off.

That depends on the value of the bike to a thief, the area it is locked and the value/lack of security of other bikes nearby.

Say goodbye to your bike at that price. Seriously. Get a Kryptonite Faghetaboudit lock for a price you can find cheapest and at least a half decent chain too if you can, with an alarmed padlock.

It all depends how much you want to deter, or at least give the thief less time to steal your bike or make a scene doing it.

I personally keep my decent bike at home and ride a beater bike as my town bike. But if you don't, and your bike is decent, get good security.

My bike is 2nd hand with a value of about £100 or so which is why I'm not sure about spending too much money on a lock... perhaps the chain you mention is good enough?

I'd seriously consider the D-lock, and it depends on what your bike has on it as to why a thief will want to steal it. If it has branded tyres, thieves sometimes steal a bike by that, but usually the bikes name too, i.e Carrera, Kona, etc. are still worth stealing to a thief.

Photo posted... this is my bike. It's about 6 to 8 years old or so. Only had it serviced yesterday.

As you can see, it's "very rough" as it has been used a lot by the previous owner. Can't see if anyone is going to bother with my bike..

I recently got an Abus grant X plus 54 30cm (bit too long, would have preferred the 24cm ver). Nice sturdy locks got a decent review, fees like a quality product, couple it with a 12mm thick cable lock and it seems to have a flighting chance from a passing chancer with some bolt cutters in his bag. I got the fabric wrap mount which is fantastic if you have odd shape tubing on your bike- so far it hasn't let me down.

It is a balancing act, how much to spend versus how secure you want your bike.
Generally the better the security the heavier it is, my Almax chain must weigh a good 10kg but then I never have to carry it on the bike.

Me too, my 70cm Almax Series III chain is home security purpose. I use a beater bike for non leisure riding.
