Right, i've decided that a hybrid is the way to go rather than a cyclocross.

My choices are

I need great clearance 35mm Winter Stud tyres, mudguards and a topeak rack. I am leaning towards hydraulic brakes as I read that they self adjust, especially after removing the wheel to fix a puncture.

i wouldnt say hydraulic brakes self adjust, i mean that would be impossible, but they are easy its true. disks used to equal weight but judging from some of the Whyte hybrids, not so much any more. i dont think you need them though, remember bikes didnt used to have such a thing and they stopped just fine.

Wet slimey days and mud n crud mean discs win every time for me.

Cable discs require cable adjustment, Hydraulic are pretty much fit n forget.

Cable are cheaper and easier tho.

Of the above i would have the Spesh 1st, but thats just me.

The fact that it is a double and the others (ridgeback/trek) are a triple does appeal.
