So I've just ordered a new roadie on the cycle scheme and cant wait to get my hands on it. A few of the guys I work with are into road cycling, triathlon etc, so I managed to get some advice from them, before making my decision.

However, on a recent visit to my mothers, my sister arrived, brandishing a new mountain bike stating she was getting into cycling telling me that she and I should get out and about on some of the routes and trails near to where she lives (it's pretty much smack in the middle of the national forest, so some of the routes are pretty awesome).

Can anyone recommend something around the £400 mark?

I ike the look of this: http://www.evanscycles.com/products/fuji/nevada-16-d-2013-mountain-bike-ec041865 , but have no idea if its good for the money.

All recommendations welcome :-)

Cheers guys!

Not being a MTBer I can't give much opinion but if you have a little bit more cash my mate goes on about his Voodoo Hoodoo which he got here and has got very good reviews online from the likes of Bike Radar.
Those links are for the 2011/12 one which you should still be able to track down, not sure about the newer one- it's a little over budget but if you join CTC you get some money off and it is a nice bike.

I did check that out as I was perusing the old webternet, it's a good looking beast, but unfortunately out of price range. CTC? (Sorry, not ofay with all the acronyms yet!)

£400 was my budget when I was looking for an MTB on our bike to work scheme. I wanted hydraulic discs and a 9 speed groupset the only bike that meet this was the GT Avalanche 3.0. Evans are selling them for £420. It's a really nice bike, you'd need to up the budget considerably to get something much better.

Cheers for that. It's only for a 'now and again' type thing so I'm not too fussed about the spec, but obviously, I want the best I can get for the money. If it turns more serious then o will severely up the budget :-)
