Which broadband provider?

It says "ping 47ms, download speed 5.8Mbps, upload speed .79mbps"
Sorry I have no idea what that means in real terms. Can you enlighten? The PC is about 4' away from the router and its got the wire thingy plugged into it. It won't do wi-fi as the white box thingy won't speak to my PC (1 year old). It won't speak to my brand new tablet either. I just reckon that its a waste of money.

What router is it you have and what have you tried to get the WiFi working ?

You should be able to Google for instructions about how to get your Sky router working using Wifi. It's pretty easy to follow, but appreciate a lot of people may shy away from it. Give it a go and post results back here if you need help.

5.8MBPS (megabits per second) isn't too bad, not brilliant. Should be enough to stream, YouTube, iPlayer should work.

You seem to have given up with it. Do you have a friendly neighbour who knows what they are doing? I remember for many years being "that bloke what knows how to sort out your network", was a bit of a rarity at the time, but these days most people seem to manage it.
 
My Sky broadband is pants. My signal strength wavers between low and moderately low. My year is up on the 31st May 2014 and I am counting the days.
Most days I cannot stream a video and I wouldn't dare download anything as the signal is not good enough.
I tried to use Sky when I was in Scotland and they were worse and I switched to BT PDQ. OH is a big sky fan. I think that they are rubbish.

I will be going with Plusnet on the 1st June next year.

None of that is Sky's fault, sadly. They use the same infrastructure (openreach) as BT.

I can't ask my neighbours really. One is more clueless than I, next door downstairs is a plumber when he works but is mostly drunk out of his head and upstairs next door are the noisy stoners.

I will give it a go. I used to be a network engineer in London. Well paid and highly skilled. It can't be that hard and I can't make it worse. The sky man plugged it all in for us. I was laying a carpet at the time.

Been with Demon for donks but IIRC they're simply re-selling the BT wholesale product which is all that's available on my exchange.

Customer service has been OK particulalry since going to ADSL2 product which has a UK call centre.

No matter who the service provider is, if cable is not an option, your service will be delivered over the Openreach network from the local telephone exchange, distance will affect the speed, so will your internal wiring (if star wired), old phones, as will some crap out of the box routers.

A lot of exchanges are being upgraded to fibre, massive difference, check the URL below to see if your local exchange is enabled or in the plans to be done.
