In a few months I'll be leaving my current job having decided to take the cash rather than let them find me another position. I'll probably look to do some interim work but will have some time to decide.

One drawback is I will have to hand back my very nice company motor and get my own but that's also quite exciting as I can get whatever I want! Until I sort out my work situation I'm thinking of getting something cheap to get me around and have come up with two very different options.......

Jaguar XJ6 - 3.2 V6, about 12 years old, 70,000 miles for just £2000.

or

Smart Roadster Coupe - 800cc, 5 years old, 30,000 miles for about £5,000.

Which would you go for??!

(oh yeah, I'll be buying myself another bicycle too as a leaving present!!)

Neither, personally.

Depends on what you want the car for, they are both differing ends of a spectrum.

If it was a 'need to use' car then I would probably go with a Skoda Octavia or Fabia TDI.
If it was for fun and weekends then I think I would get an MGB, either ready to run or for light restoration. Or maybe a Series 2 or 3 LWB Land Rover.

The Jag, easy. In a few years a 3.2l V6 is going to be so expensive to drive, insure and tax, plus so socially aberrant that you may as well have your fun now.

I'll be leaving my job with a nice little pay out in September. I'll have to find another job but I'll maintain my old car and I think the only 'new' thing will be a family holiday and something bike like

Surely with the cost of insurance, the price of fuel and ever increasing road tax that day is well and truly here?

+1 Had to get rid of my Jag, getting far to expensive

There really is no choice here.

German? Far too obvious.

Lexus? Please!

American? Vulgar.

French? French don't do luxury.

Swedish? Are you a dentist?

Italian? Trying too hard.

Hot hatch? No thanks, I have to shave every day now.

4x4? If you live in the sticks and genuinely get iced/snowed in then you may have a LandRover Defender.

p.s. I may have been drinking.

My wife had a Land Rover - apart from her Alfa it's the car I'm less likely to buy than any on the planet! Driving a tractor would have been both more comfortable and more reliable!!

The Jag will be used as a cheap to buy, get me from A to B mode of transport (where I wouldn't be cycling!). If it transpires I need something to do loads of mileage I'll get myself a diesel BMW.

As for the suggestion of buying a Citroen van

as 515mm says, its a bit obvious going for a german, having said that our family mpv went pop in a very special way last year and was a £2.5k bill from the garage... instead of spending all our money on repairing a mid level french piece of sh*t I bought a 1997BMW 323i tourer with Full BMW Service history and 110k on the clock for £750.

It is a top spec version with full leather and all the trimmings, it drives amazingly smooth (quieter and more comfortable on journeys than my 54 plate 320D Sport). The only down side is that it depresses me when I fill up a tank as it costs 10% of the value of the car!

Buy a cheap reliable midsize german car and splash out on a fancy bike.
