Which groupset for project?

My old pal Alongo has donated me a Look 555 from maybe 2007 not exactly sure on year.
What groupset should I fit? Keep it historic with an old school one or something modern?
It’s hard to find a silver gruppo now Campag and Shimano stopped making them.
The tires will have to stay 25 max.
There’s a lot of worn out crap on eBay and it’s still expensive for what it is.

Looks like it will have originally come with a Shimano 105 5600 or Ultegra 6600 groupset.

Personally I'd try to pick up 10-speed pieces and build it up from there. @cyberknight just posted up a 10 speed groupset-fitted bike with silver bits. May be suitable? Or the Tiagra 4600 groupset he's stuck up to get you going?

I do now have a spare set of Tiagra 4600 shifters, but the link above includes derailleurs.

If you can find a decent second hand period group set go for it, else I would go modern (as far as rim brake allows modern to be).
NOS tends to cost a fortune.

I have just fitted a 12 speed Sram wifi set up with a flat bar shifter ( fitted on drop bars ) to a Planet X RT58 carbon frame, it was my mates lads, the seat post is stuck in, its a 31.6mm, but the inside dia is 27.2mm so that's what's fitted now, I have stripped the paint, its now polished carbon, it has 25mm Continental Gator Skin tyres, these are the tightest tyres I have ever dealt with, I would struggle at the side of the road with these and in a lifetime of cycling I must of fitted hundreds.
I have left over from the build, Shimano 11speed front and rear dérailleurs and a torturous looking Planet X seat, I also have a little used Tiagra 10 speed rear dérailleur, open to offers.

That's what I did to my Cannondale 31.6 -27.2 worked a treat and more compliant too!

The former is your shifters and mechs, the middle includes chainset, the latter will include wheels, seat post, stem, handlebars, brakes, etc. What people call a groupset is usually anything but.

Ultegra 6600 IMO was a sweet spot, I’ve got the 6600SL version on my 2007 Van Nicholas with Dura Ace Brifters and it’s just lovely reliable stuff, feels like it will last forever. However it does hold its price and is still quite expensive used especially in good condition as lots of it is pretty worn out now.

Worth trying to find the SL version which is very slightly lighter and came an ice blue finish.

@Gunk - I've gone instead for Dura-Ace 7900 plus a pair of 7800 shifters on another bike. IMO 7900 is lovely, but very pricey to obtain.

Thats a part of one. It varies with range, manufacturer and year, but almost always has far more than just the drive train and stoppers in a full groupset.

Is one of those terms erroneously popularised in magazines and reviews by people who dknt really knkw what theyre taking about, and once theyd used it incorrectly enough times the lemmings blindly followed. Only the daft take the word of the tester that was writing for a model railway magazine less than a year before.

Take Ultegra, the favourite tipple of many a discerning rider. The exact spec varies across the years, but a full groupset with the U on it will include such delights as rims, hubs, bars, seat post, QR skewers or spindles, SL pedals, etc.

A drivertrain, or more often simply a geartrain, is a part of a groupset. It is not not a grouset on and of itself any more than a cylinder head is an engine.

Yes that’s the old school way. These days they call the drivetrain the gruppo and all the other parts are other brands. All the old guard still love to use their old terminology. I’ve seen plenty saying “I’m still using my Campag 9 speed it will see me out” etc.

I found a nice 6600 but I don’t like the gear cables not under the bar tape.
