I usually stretch my right arm forward, palm upwards and move it slightly forward, whilst I'm in a position that stops others overtaking in the first place, preferably whilst moving towards the bus slowly so they have time to realise and use the gap I'm creating. Bristol bus drivers seem to understand anyway.

Nah, they're just getting the hell out of dodge before you get any closer

I wait behind the bus, in view of the driver's mirror, no signal required.
They seem to understand, sometimes I get a wave or thumbs up - in that case I give the thumbs up back.
I'd stop even if there's still one passenger to aboard if I know the bus is going my way for a while: don't wanna inflict 5mph till town to the poor bus driver!

I'd do this... (as do most others, it seems) ...
An ostentatiously chivalrous cross-body sweep finishing in a hand outstretched forward
...coupled with not pedalling. I reckon they notice the fact i'm not pedalling, therefore not trying to increase my speed, coupled with the poncy (poncey, poncie?) gesture. But more often than not, if I'm coming up the arse end of a bus (calling @Fnaar), i just hold back for as long as i can (probably in its blind spot) and let it go ahead, otherwise I just end up playing leapfrog with it as it overtakes me between stops then i overtake it, over and over and over.

Last night, Bromptoming back from to hearing my daughter play in a concert to where I'd left the car far enough out of her university town to be free parking, I came up behind a bus, ready to pull out from the stop, but clearly unsure whether I was going to let it out or not. I was so mesmerised by the coincidence with this thread that I fannied around in the middle of the road, gave no indication to anyone of my intentions, slowed but not enough to be decisive, and resulted in me, the bus, and about three cars behind me all stuck stationary waiting for each other.

Nothing. Motorists who flash lights pressure incompetent motorists into endangering other road users. This and all variations of it should be stamped out. If the bus isn't indicating to pull out, I'd probably pass it. If it is indicating, Stagecoach East tend to just pull out then anyway!

I have waved to the driver in their mirror to go ahead by holding my arm to the right and forward in a diagonal way, palm up, sometimes I flap my fingers up and down. Usually works and gets a wave back in response.

I'm enjoying the descriptions of the signals. I've just had a go at this one whilst seated at a table - it looks a bit like tickling an invisible person under the arms, who is seated diagonally opposite. Or if you look along the extended arm it's like you are trying to cast a spell on someone outside the window.
