I have used an indicator for years, very comfy, plenty of adjustment, stands up well to being dropped  - if you are not fussed on colour, there are often eBay deals

Have also just got a Specialized Echelon, a better helmet and more road oriented (no peak) - got for £30

Would recommend you go to your LBS and try a few on as they do vary in size and shape

As per Vickster - go and try some on. They all vary and it'll depend on your head size. Mine's odd so I ended up in the mid-range helmets which Uvex make. The final choice was leing lightweight - so I went for their FP1 which I got for £65 instead of £120 since it was last year's 'colour scheme'.

Fit first, then price. After that its all much the same. You could check various tests and standards but they are generally the same. Its down to what you fancy.

As above, try some on and see what you think. I've got a Giro Indicator which has always been fab!

I do need to find out what the difference is between a roadie and an mtb helmet though.... just the spoiler?

No one else said anything until you did! People were offering the OP advice on helmet choice as he asked  Get thee away to the helmet debate threads ;)

GazP - I have to confess that I am yet to wear it (still using the indicator), but felt comfy to try on

I just bought a helmet a couple of weeks ago. Seems that a lot of sportives require you to wear one, so i bite the bullet and got one.
I tried loads, from Halfords cheap ones to the top Giro ones (the Ionos), and everyone felt horrible. But one shop gave me the Specialized Echelon to try,,and that felt perfect,,hav'nt wore it in anger yet,,but it feels like i could wear it all day no problem,,,cost £40,,so can't complain.

Just had a look at mine - it's a Giro Skyline.

To be honest, you really could do with having a try of a few helmets to see which one fits your size of head. If you are going to wear one it might as well be comfortable

PS: I know people say road helmets for road bikes, but if you don't use the drops much then a peaked mtb helmet will be fine (and gives a bit of rain protection when it's chucking it down). The peaks are usually removeable as well.

As many have already said you really need to go and try several on to see which fits better.

I used to have the Giro Indicator which was excellent value for money and then a Specialised which I loved untill I decided to get a closer look at the tarmac and crack it.

Moved onto the Giro Prolight which is an excellent helmet, very light and well vented, but also a little dear, £140. I work for a bike shop so never paid that for it. The Giro Prolight now seems to be discontinued so you may be able to pick it up for a good price.

Wot they said ^^^^^

Find one that fits, and then think about price. I've got a Giro (not sure exactly which one), and i was, for once in my life, a lucky bugger in that the last one in shop fitted me like a glove, so i got it chucked in free when i bought the bike. But fit first!!

Any you'd recommend (Road Helmet) that aren't as dear as the Prolight? How does the Giro Monza compare?
