It seems like the Carerra Subway is a popular choice! Would people recommend buying one new at £200 over maybe a better spec but second hand bike?

Oh, and I'd be sure to try one out for size but I'm guessing being 6' 1, I'd be needing an 22"/XL frame?

Buy a new Subway & a 22" might be right for you, if you can go down and sit on one (I'm 5'11". I have a 20". I have had an 18" in the past but was slightly too small).

Seen a few bits on here about Decathlon, not bad for the money i think, i know they do a model called a Rockrider (think thats right), retails for around £160 upwards, may be worth a look, depends what you want it for i suppose.

The problem with the Rockriders is that they have suspension forks, not good for road riding.

Their hybrids are a bit weird.

Been to try out a subway today, like the bike but unsure on the size. One of the blokes there reckoned the one on display was a 20" but another guy said it was an 18". I had to have the saddle quite high for it to feel right. So still unsure on what size is right for me as I don't even know what size the one I tried was! I'm just over 6' tall but inside leg measurement of 35", which halfords say is a 20" frame yet other size guides say is a 22".

Can anyone that owns a subway give me some advice?

I put earlier in the thread, I'm 5ft 8 with an 18" subway - you defo don't want an 18 inch and I doubt that's what you tried cos it would have been far too small. As a guess i'd say a 22 would be good (that's also based on your trying a 20 today - if it was infact an 18 then I'd suggest trying a definite 20!).

Widened my search again to get an idea of whats available to me. Think I know what I'm headed towards anyway, but what would people get if they had the choice of the below:

Carrera Subway - £180 with 10% discount code:

Decathlon B'twin Fitness 3 - £200 (Although upon looking again it seems to be sold out locally):

Dawes Discovery 201 - £270:

Trek 7.0 FX - £300:

Specialized Sirrus 2011 - £300:

I really like the look of the Decathlon but it seems to be out of stock in the 60cm frame

As you are not a million miles away from Clacton on Sea, it may be worth your while visiting a 2nd hand bike trader in our covered market. He has a permanent site there and trades as Madcycles. He gets some really nice stuff, and i'm sure he would be happy to keep your number so he can bell you if he gets a sniff of what you are after.

I've gone ahead and reserved a 22" Carrera Subway for collection tomorrow  Tried a 20" at a different store today and was definitely too small. Decided although I could quite easily spend the extra money on something a bit better, the Carrera is too good a deal to pass up at £180 and will do me just fine for the kind of cycling I'll be doing. I can always upgrade at a later time if I get properly into cycling again!

Thanks for all the help guys!

As a very very rough guide, when you say you had the saddle quite high, could you fit more than an extended hands width under the saddle and the top tube? If so then get the 22"

Personally I would say Trek is the best choice between the choices you have. I've rode Giant's, raleighs, Scotts, Treks, carreras and oranges. Out of all the bikes i have always thought trek have set a good standard in the quality of their bikes. But this is just one guys opinion.
