Which mapping software for route planning?

Was wondering which mapping PC software is best for route planning rides to print out and/or download to a Garmin GPS? Would also like to use it for planning hikes on foot into national parks etc.

The main options seem to be Track Logs or Memory Map, would people recommend these products or some other software? I actually have a Mac, but Mac-native route-planning software seems limited, however I can boot my mac into Windows mode and run PC programs, so its not a huge issue...

I use bikemap.net for route planning, then if you want a gpx file to up load to a GPS use GMapToGPX to convert the Google Maps data to GPX (it is a plugin for Firefox and IE), it works with any Google map site....
