I'm a an Olympic contender cheapskate.
Get a new unlocked Motorola. Try g15, at the moment. Then a Lebara monthly SIM card. Mine is ~£5 a month. Cancel, top up, change, upgrade at will

I'm after something a bit more premium but thanks for the suggestion.

That sounds nice. I did consider the Oppo but I've only ever had "big brand" phones so I was a bit sceptical. I've had samsung, Apple, Motorola before and whilst good, they always felt overpriced for what you get. I ended up getting a Google Pixel 9 (about £400 new) which for me is great. Does everything the samsung galaxy S(insert latest but one model) does, but at less than half the price.

I also only jump in to new phones when they've been out for a while, so that the "new to me phone latest model" has in fact already been superseded so is much cheaper

Update. I have ordered an Oppo Find x10 Pro Max. The list price is ridiculous but with a £100 off coupon, a trade in bonus for my old phone and a key worker discount I got it for £869 which unbelievably includes a free gift of their X3 smart watch. Happy with that deal.

It does look like a nice piece of kit but that is way beyond what I would pay for a laptop, let alone a phone.
