So you're saying that I should spend £500 on a phone that I can't use apps on, access my emails, sync my contacts with Google, use location services, use social networking, use sat nav? Why wouldn't I use an old phone and a £30 mp3 player?

Please don't spend £500 on a phone* There are now several brands that give you what you need for way less. I use a Wiley Fox. Other brands are available.

Absolutely your call as to what you do Sorry not to agree with you. A search will give you several "best portable player of 2017" comparative tests.

*not, of course, that that was what I was suggesting you do.

I know, I have a Nokia 215 and a Galaxy S6. I'm going to use the Nokia.

You don't have to be sorry.

Thanks, I'm aware of the internet. Its just nice to get some personal opinions sometimes. That's why I asked here.

Sorry, this seemed to suggest I should stay with my £500 S6.

EDIT: And your Wiley Fox is running Android, which is as privacy unfriendly as they come, and another reason I'm downgrading.

In between here and there
I would put money on it that the FM radio will be no better than your phone they all use your headphones as the antenna like the phone does and that is where they fall over.

OP, I am with you, rarely have my smart phone on me and hardly ever whilst cycling. I recently lost my Creative Zen mp3 player and bought a Kubik Evo from Amazon, I really miss the former, never realised what a good simple design it was, the Kubik is right palaver to find songs and the screen is too small, the buttons too small, it's screen is crap in light too.

I am going to have to buy another Zen

OK, that's good to know. Thanks a lot. Did you leave a review on Amazon as I think I recall reading it?

No, tbh the Kubik might be an ok mp3 player for what Ipaid, sub £30, it's just that having it makes me realise just how good the Zen was!

There's quite a few of the mini speakers with telescopic aerials like

I suspect a wire with croc clips between the antenna and metal handlebars or frame might work quite well but I've not tried it because I went for one with Bluetooth instead but wish I'd gone for FM.

Hello all,

I did do a quick search but all the discussion I could find on here is out-of-date.

I am downgrading my phone, just sick of the pervasiveness of the modern smartphone, its constantly nagging at me and distracting me. I don't use social networking and I like my privacy. The only things I'll miss from having a £500.00 phone is the camera, satnav and my music (ok, and the web on the go).

First off, I will address music, since I would really miss this on my commute. Also, since its going to be a dedicated music player I would really like to listen to the radio on the go.

So, please can any of you with knowledge of a decent mp3 player with good radio reception let me have your recommendations?

Meanwhile, behold the wonder of the Nokia 215.
