'Our' area in France is a real delight to orchid-spotters: you can see growing wild and often in abundance, species which are rare or endangered in Britain. Those few hundred miles further south are a boon!
The Lizard Orchid (large inflorescence, not particularly 'attractive') grows like a weed by the roadsides - but in Britain it is rare. And we see many Fly Orchids, Lady Orchids, Military Orchids, Early Spider Orchids, Violet Limodores, Burnt Orchids, etc. etc.
The Greater Butterfly Orchid is not a particular rarity in UK: I know of at least one site on the Downs where it flowers in the hundreds .... but on one walk in France, there were so many growing, by the path, on the roadside verges, in the fields, etc. etc. that we could with difficulty avoid treading them down. It is a lovely delicate flower and a pleasure to come across.
