Daniel Sturridge has two champions league winners medals from two different clubs but hasn't played in a final. He explained the other day why he feels his medals are justified:

"I contributed and even the players who haven’t played a minute,” said the striker, who made seven Champions League appearances this season and scored in the group win against Paris Saint-Germain. “There are guys who have been on the bench and haven’t played a single minute but have been a part of it: from training, to acting like the opposition that we have been playing against, to doing a job, to sacrificing themselves and the way they play just to do a job on the training field.”

Sounds fair enough to me. The game isn't just won in 90 minutes.

He may be right and that may be the feeling of professional footballers.

In the good old days when Liverpool were virtually unbeatable, they'd get a box containing 20 league champions medals from the FA. Bugsy Moran would empty the box on the table in the changing room after they'd paraded the trophy and said that anyone who felt their contribution warranted one of the medals, they should pick one out of the pile themselves.

That's how it should be done and one of the building blocks for success the next season. None of that namby-pamby softness that ruins the game nowadays by making people soft and mardy.

And goalkeeper Jimmy Rimmer received two European Cup Winners medals after being on the bench for Manchester United in their 1968 win and played the same position for Aston Villa when they won it in 1981.
