The Trek hardtail I bought Mrs Fox to replace the one stolen in October, her face lit up when I wheeled in into the lounge on Christmas morning. I get more pleasure out of giving presents than receiving.

I got the most incredible accidental present today, without any intention or pre planning I got a ride on the foot plate of 1744 0-6-2t locomotive!:hyper:

Me Onna Train 1744T.jpg

I was on a short one station return trip which lead to the terminus. I went up to have a look at the engine and was invited onboard wth a couple of other people to have a look.
I asked if they were going to move the engine to the other end of the train for the return trip and then asked if we could stay on for the ride.
So I got a ride on the footplate, forwards past the points, backwards on the adjacent track, forward to the back of the train and recoupled. It was so good. I was balanced a pile of coal and the shovel trying not to fall forwards into the firebox!
Fantastic experience.

I knew the original owner of the locomotive, an eccentric physics lecturer from Leeds University called Fred Youell. He was passionate about railwaysa and was a founder member of Middle Railway Trust here in Leeds.

He was, I believe, a fellow of the Institute of plate layers and was entrusted as a 'civvie' to slew tracks to join preserved railways to the main line to facilitate locomotive and stock movements.

The man was a legend.

Fantastic!
I assume by original owner you mean first owner after 1744 first was taken out of service.
