Looking at the specs vs price, the nexus 4 looks to be far far better VFM than the galaxy or iPhone. A couple of hundred quid cheaper for near as dammit the same (on paper) processing power etc.
I'm dipping my toe into windows phones right now with a Nokia lumia 800. Cheap to buy, bombproof screen and case-ideal for bunging in a pocket with keys and multitool and because windows mobile has been set up to be as helpful (idiot proof) as possible, maybe a good starting phone for someone new to smartphones. No disrespect meant in that, I've come from using android phones where there is far more scope to tinker to the n'th degree, and have had to get used to trusting the phone to do the background power savey things etc. Fair play to it tho, it does seem to manage them well and even with quite a bit of browsing, kindle, phone use the battery lasts well.
Coverage: ask the locals. I've switched to o2 from Vodafone recently as same phone/same place tests showed them invariably to be a bar better and 3g vs g or worse, but in poor signal rural areas and half way up Snowden neither were great.

Coverage issues is another reason that I've gone with the Nexus, as it's an outright purchase so I can grab some cheap / free SIM cards for different networks, just in case one of them has decided to provide a service available to Chateau Norm.
