Hi,

Im looking to take my Dad on a distillery tour for his birthday next year.

Seems like there is a lot of choice, and to be honest I like a drop of Whisky but Im no connoisseur. Im happy with a can of Banks`s!

Can anyone recommend one they have been on, or any to avoid?

Speyside. A trail of distilleries, best if he likes Speyside malts.

Isle of Arran. A small distillery on the Isle of Arran. Combine with a terrific 50 mile cycle round the island!

Glengoyne (just north of Glasgow). If you don't really want to head for the Highlands or Islands.

There is no such thing as a distillery to avoid!

About 18 months ago my partner John and I went to a place near Inverness to vivist his childhood friend. Whilst there we went to the Glen Moray distillery very near Elgin. The distillery tour was quiet and we had a one on one tour which meant we got to ask lots of questions. The tour guide was very knowledgable and friendly. After the tour we given 4 different whiskeys to taste.

For shear impression the Glenmorangie distillery is fantastic as their stills are very tall and they have a lot of them. This tour was busier and less personal.

If you are going to the Isle of Skye then there is the Talisker distillery. This one was the most disappointing of the three we visited, but the venue is a sight to behold.

What whiskies does your dad have in his cabinet? It might give you clues about where to take him. Not everybody likes island malts and I guess that they may be a bit of an acquired taste for some.

Over the years he had most of them, and like the majority. He has recently started liking Pendeyn (the welsh one ) as they have a caravan over that way and like to show his support!

But Also has had glenmorangie, Glenfidich (12 and 18 yr, prefers the 12) GlenLivet (12 and 18, prefers the 12), Jura. These are the one we usually buy for birthdays and such.

When buying himself he usually gets Whyte and Mackay or johnnie walker, but that because if we haven't brough it for him my Mum will have some, and she has orange juice in it which is a crime to do with the ones we buy him.

It sounds like he'd be happier with the ''finer'' Speyside whiskies. I haven't done a whisky tour but I gather there's a healthy density of Speyside distilleries. (Personally, I'd go for Laphroaig- or Talisker-type whisky distilleries. Though I have to say I don't know the north of Glasgow whiskies.)

I seen a few in the Speyside/Dufftown area when on holidays there a few years ago and liked Strathisla best. They are very generous with the free sample....

Edradour is a nice small distillery(I think smallest in Scotland), just outside Pitlochry. We cycled up to it from Pitlochry where we were staying, so could sample the offerings.
