Yeay! CTC here as well but household insurance for theft as most of the cycle specific insurers put too many restrictions on. (haven't had to claim on either yet though)

Mind you there are allegedly 2.5 million uninsured drivers on the roads which is only set to rise in the current recession..

One of the reasons your insurance premiums are so high is that your insurer is required to contribute to the funding of the Motor Insurers Bureau. The MIB then pays out to victims of unisured drivers. Every insured driver pays up to £30 a year towards this.

I tried to join the LCC, but the online form offers only a start-date of 20th August, and after leaving a message on their ansafone a week ago, nobody has returned my call.

What is it about cycle campaign groups and membership?!

Oh, and I tried ETA. For the two bikes, they wanted £292! Contrast that with the £85/year I pay on my household all-risks for theft, and the £35-ish for CTC/LCC for third-party cover.

CTC (well, obviously). The great merit of 3rd party insurance is that it gives you protection from spurious counterclaiming, which is the favourite tactic of insurance companies wanting to deter claims against motorists. And, as many have said, don't leave home without it.

my total for two bikes was £112 including £10 joining fee - but like I said I did get the 40% discount because the bikes folded. I presume your bikes are worth quite a bit more than mine!

One of my bikes is a folding one, so I presume got the discount. Total value for the two is 3k, so the premium for non-folders must be way over 10%, which is nuts.

Well, they e-mailed me today with a nice letter thanking me for supporting them and enjoining all and sundry to let me have discounts while I am waiting for my membership card to come through.

I have a number. I am insured.
