Of the bicycle variety?! My bike will be left outside of uni 3 days a week. I have 2 locks including a kryptonite D lock. I only have a triban 3 but being a student the £280 I paid for it is a lot of money right now! Have had quotes of £29 for the year which seems pretty cheap. Just wondered if anyone can recommended from personal experience a decent firm?!

Ben.

I have insurance through Evans. More for the third party liability if I was involved in an accident which was my fault. I don't consider myself an unsafe cyclist but I like to think my back is covered and i'm as covered as the other vehicles that I share a road with.

Good D locks such as Abus Granit X Plus and self insure. Not worth taking out a policy for such a low value bike. It might be covered by house insurance contents policy anyway.

Errr .... OP is not talking about 3rd party insurance but insuring his own bike which is totally different.

Errr.... both my cycle insurance and third party liability are provided under the same cover. What's with the attitude?

No attitude, just pointing out they are two quite different types of risks covered by two types of quite different insurance. But of course you knew this didn't you.

I do have 3rd party myself (and massive general legal cover) but never bothered with bike insurance. The money is better spent on good security (which I think you'd have to prove anyway if your bike was half-inched.)

Did you start reading his post half way through?

His insurance is provided through Evans, this answers the OP's question,
He then continues with the reason he chose that policy being more for 3rd party than theft.

personally my bikes weren't insured while I was at uni, they were locked up in the house when I wasn't in, had a krypto-flex that wrapped through the front wheel, through the fork and attached to the D lock that was through the rear triangle and rear wheel.

I tended to not leave the expensive mountain bike anywhere and that lived upstairs in the house outside my room but my landlord was a cyclist so he understood.

The thing to remember with cycle theft at uni, they're normally after something they can take quickly and sell easily for £20-£40 so if you make it a pain to take, it'll normally still be there - think about where you're parking it, alternating between two places, you want somewhere that has a constant stream of people for it to be hard to do anything, but not too busy that it provides cover for tampering.

some universitys have cycle lockers which could be worth looking into

if the insurance gives you peace of mind, £29 isn't a bad price.

no insurance (except 3rd party through CTC) for bikes - just leave ours with good locks (abus granit x and squire paramount plus D locks plus at home either indoors or locked onto towbar mounted bike carrier which can't be moved from where it is without taking bikes off because of space issues in and out) and make them look less of a target than other bikes...

My bikes are specifically covered and listed on my house insurance, at home or out and about, and I myself are covered for injury and liability through a specific policy through MIAS for £50 a year, which also gives me £5,000,000 of cover for teaching as well.

i have my allez (and accessories) noted as an extension to my home policy. as i have personal belongings cover (about £20 per year for £2k worth of cover for all my items i take out ^_^ ) its peanuts really. My giant MTB falls below the single article limit so doesnt need to be specified.

this also includes up to £5k cover for it when in my garage, £2.5 m liab cover and £50 k legal expenses.
