If you can you should. This doesn't apply to all physical or sporting activities but for a natural movement such as running then I think everyone should do it to some extent if at all able.

Cycling is an enjoyable activity for many and a great way to get around. It can certainly be a part of anyones fitness regime but bang per buck nothing beats running. I would put some form of training with either weights or body weight second.

Ironman?!

Yep only marathon I’ve done. However it was before Ironman became a brand so I guess these days it wouldn’t be classed as one.

I don't reckon I'm built right to run; wrong ratios, wrong physiology... it just feels wrong. I can run but it always feels like a dumpy lumbering as opposed to the fluid and seemingly effortless lope of long legged athletes (yep, I've got little legs)

I enjoyed orienteering though. I guess that changed the emphasis just enough for me to not feel quite so ungainly.

Never been into running that much as I usually injure myself by doing too much.

However I've just started the NHS couch to 5k app a couple weeks ago and that builds up gradually with walk/run intervals. Hopefully sticking to a plan will stop me jumping straight into a parkrun and knackering my hip or knee again

I too have just re- started the C25K as part of a general losing weight/getting fitter campaign.
Enjoying it so far though I have to be mindful of a dodgy knee, hopefully as my weight comes down the impact on it will lessen.

Actually did my first ever parkrun a few weeks back up in Keswick, really enjoyed it though I did walk most of it.

I'm never going to be a runner but if I can get a few 5ks under my belt I'll be happy.

You'll get hooked and do more than a few 5ks

Tried it this morning and it went rather well.
Turns out I can run an 8 minute mile which must be pretty good because I'm more than twice the age Roger Bannister was when he did the 4 minute mile.
What I've noticed is that running's an attritional sport and as I've stayed at roughly the same pace, everyone else in my age group has got slower.

Tried it again on Saturday and am now nursing a torn hamstring. Definitely a higher risk pastime than cycling especially for the inflexible cyclist.

Yikes, that sounds nasty! I hope that it is only a minor tear and that it therefore heals quickly.

Cheers Colin. I'm hobbling about reasonably well at the moment in an attempt to remobilise myself.
Got some Christmas shifts at the sorting office starting next week which are all about the walking, hopefully I'll be fit enough for that.

When I was a more active member of my running club we had several members who were Posties ( 2 of them were ex bank managers who'd had enough of the stress and " targets " ). There were also a couple of lads who were " on the bins " both very good runners, I suppose the amount of distance they covered each day and the physicality of the job really helped with fitness.

Did it last year. 7 hours a day on your feet sorting parcels and pushing trollies. Didn't do any other exercise beyond the 4 mile cycle commute each way.
Went out for a run in January after I'd finished: bang on PB pace without even trying to push it.
