I used to run in the early 1990's before I took up cycling again after last riding a bike in my school days in the 1970's. I used to do 12 laps of the cemetery directly over the wall from my parents house I still lived in. 12 laps was approximately 4 miles which was enough as my shins tended to hurt after that. Wearing cheap training shoes probably didn't help. I stopped running in 1995 when I took up cycling again, due to getting a job 4 miles from home and not then owning a car. The cycle to work soon turned into cycle for fun, relaxation and health, meaning me becoming a 'roadie' buying a quite heavy Carrera 'drop handlebars' bike from Halfords, soon followed by better bikes, but always fondly remembering many great rides on my Carrera. I tried running again after a few years of cycling but found it difficult as I'd developed an odd running movement which didn't feel right. Before my current mobility problems which sadly made me give up cycling I tried to run but just couldn't do it. Not through being out of breath or stamina, more co-ordination as my arm and leg movements did not work well together.

Eurgh…

I’m 5’10 and 95ish KG so running doesn’t suit my knees.

But… I’ve done two marathons, several half’s, countless 10 & 5Kms. A few triathlons, an Outlaw 70.3 and Ironman 70.3 earlier this year.

Running is hard, it’s not enjoyable and I’d rather ride my bike and that’s my attitude at the moment.

I’ll probably start running again in a few weeks once I’ve finished a DIY project but at the minute nothing huge. Probably aim for 5ks.

Tried it this morning and it went rather well.
Turns out I can run an 8 minute mile which must be pretty good because I'm more than twice the age Roger Bannister was when he did the 4 minute mile.
What I've noticed is that running's an attritional sport and as I've stayed at roughly the same pace, everyone else in my age group has got slower.

Life long cyclist but was quite good at running at school. Set a school record for 800m that was still there when my much younger brother went to the school. Did a bit of running to keep winter fitness up but over did it one year that damaged my tendon in my knee.

Not run for years other than a bit with MTB or if 'late' for something.

Not allowed to run now after making a mess of my hip socket back in January. Absolutely no shock inducing exercise as my hip socket should have been replaced but wasn't diagnosed. It's healed OK though.

When I was out this afternoon I decided to cross the road at the traffic lights which were on red even though the green man wasn’t showing and yes you guessed it a car came round the corner. So I had to break into what these days constitutes the nearest equivalent to a run and I survived with no injuries

I can do a mile in the same time as Bannister's age when he set the record.

One of my running friends is still running as he approaches 80. He's exceptional in that he has been running for decades and ran sub 3 hour marathons in his 20's, 30's, 40's 50's and 60's. He did have a crack at it when he hit 70 but a forced lay off due to an injury while training meant he missed out, running iirc about 3:20 ish.
I once had a bit of a purple patch when I was training for the longer stuff, running 4 sub 3 marathons in a period of about 8 weeks while also doing the regular 20+ mile weekly club runs on the Sundays that I wasn't racing. I now feel chuffed if I manage a sub 3 half marathon 😁
