Has anyone tried running?

I have just re-started "running" after 40 years and realise I should have returned sooner.

I'm 69 so it's now a mixture of running /walking which I do alongside a reduced cycling regime.

My lungs were gettings slightly worse with just cycling and old age but have now improved enormously - I think it gets the upper body more active and better integrated rather than being largely passive when cycling.

I have a few ankle/knee problems which have to be managed and varying walking and running helps this.

Running is nature’s way of telling you that you set off too late.

You'll need to pay someone to chase you to remain compliant.

Done a lot of running over the years but a cycling accident 2015 damaged my knee, so stopped for a long time, I have run since but not a lot, now after another cycling accident, I have decided to give running another go, what's holding me back is I have a Strava target of 100,000 miles on the bike before the year end, once that's out of the way I will give running more attention.

I wish I could run.

I only took up cycling when I gave up running because of knee and lower back problems, and while I love it I still miss the simplicity and freedom of running.

I have tried it again recently to build up fitness after a cycling layoff and, sadly, at 78 years old seem to have lost the ability. My knees and ankles don't seem able to stop my feet thudding into the ground rather than just landing quietly. On runs around a local park I adopt a system of jogging around 150 yards and walking 100 yards. Not very fast, or elegant, but it does seem to help.

In all my years of running I've always been a " slapper ". I could never sneak up on club mates in races, I'd gain on them and prepare to make an effort to overtake, only to hear " that you Kev? " 😁. I now wear well cushioned running shoes, usually " Hoka " brand which have different levels of cushioning with " Plush " being my choice. I'm still tootling at 76.
Perhaps some well cushioned shoes might help?

I started running 9 years ago when I was 55 and did Couch to 5k. I've now completed 162 parkruns and one 10k race.
I used to do a few training runs during the week, but it hurt, so now it's parkrun on Saturday, yoga on Monday, swimming on Wednesday and body conditioning for the over 50s on Friday.
And a short bike ride virtually everyday.

I’m probably going to get shot or at least banned for saying this… though I love cycling, it comes a definite second for me, after running. According to my running log I’m at 50,000 miles over the last 40 plus years and I don’t intend stopping until I fall over. It does things for my head that cycling just doesn’t do for me. YMMV.

I too used to love running. I was well practiced at hitting my rhythm and quickly entering thet mental zone where the brain seems to disconnect from the body.
