Just seen watching morning TV and the comment "and he has won the gold medal after training six hours a day for the last six years" with the accent on all that hard work

The bloke played table tennis, so fair play to him being better than anyone else , but my dad trained eight hours a day for fifty years to keep us clothed , fed and holidays, and I’ve done the same for twenty-five years now.

Most people on here will be doing the same so who should be going to see the queen and being celebrated as national hero’s

Dont get me wrong, yes he deserves a medal , but where is my dads.

Good point Diddy. I work 12 hours a day, I been beaten up, shot at, and it's all in a days work. It's what I do. I don't expect adulation or admiration for cracking on and working hard.

While I don't doubt this 'athletes' dedication and commitment, 6 hours a day training to punt a featherlight ball across a table isn't exactly a nutbuster of a task.

Where's it say we're to regard him as a hero? He wants a medal more than the next person is about as far as that goes.

My wife selflessly cares for some extremely disabled children, 24 hours a day every second week and has done all her professional life and in my opinion deserves an MBE never mind the description of hero but before the end of the month, in a particularly cruel form of government-driven NHS Russian Roulette, she will lose the right to be able to do that. Or she may keep the privilege of being able to do that but has to take on several other nurses' responsibilities as well. Or they will take on hers. The amount of irreplaceable experience thrown out of the health service on the altar of the money god is truly disturbing.

I don't get it. The guy plays table tennis and wins a medal. That's fine.
Who says he's a hero?
