Colleague of mine sent an e-mail yesterday to a customer, with a flippant comment in the text (not subject) that his new lighting layout will mean that you will need to wear Raybans.

Today, he received a spam e-mail with a special offer on Raybans.

Coincidence?

Depends on his email provider, if it is done in house then it should not occur, a free external provider and anything goes.

Unlikely that there's a direct link between email and a spam mail provider, but services like Gmail will base Google ads (anywhere online) on contents of your email. I believe Google have confirmed this, though say that no BODY looks at your email; just an automated crawler.

If you don't pay for the product... YOU are the product. I don't use Gmail anymore, and am moving away from Google services generally.

It's public knowledge that companies like Google scan emails to target advertising.

There are other ways of tracking down your online activities too - all in the name of targeted advertising and national security
