Quite a few years back before covid I would get 8 to 10 demo bikes from the local bike shop and invite friends to come and join me for a trail ride. I did this for several years and even had some come out with me at different times over the years using one of several spare trail bikes I own. Fast forward to this year and Paul who bought a trail bike two years ago has decided to come ride with me. He has been using his trail bike mainly on the roads around his neighborhood with his grandson. I informed Paul that I do an easy trail ride on Wednesdays with Rick who lives right at the trail entrance in The Burg (Fitchburg, MA.) home of the fourth hilliest city in the US. This video is of Paul joining us for his third real trail ride this year. I think he's doing quite well and starting to get a tad more comfortable with each visit. With each ride Rick and I will throw a new challenge at him, and as we tell him if you're not comfortable going up and over something just walk. We are just three old dogs having fun, I'm the young dog at 65, Rick is 67, and Paul is 68.

Excellent stuff!

During the initial phase get him to rotate controls round the bars a bit. That'll force him to lift his elbows up and out, give him better control off road. It'll feel odd at first but after a while it becomes second nature.

I had a similar challenge with some of the students on my courses. None as old as your chum, but some hadnt ridden a bike in 25 or 30 years, but by the end of the week I could have them doing some radical stuff.
