Personally I'll watch yours, and some that you recommend, but I do find a tendancy by camera cyclist to shall we say 'be selective' in their footage so that it shows them in a favourable light

Aye, i normally do just above 160miles in the 5 day commuting period, taking a shorter route at the moment as i'm still recovering from christmas :P

I saw a cycle camera clip the other day where they cyclest had been stopped by a police officer (also on a bike) for jumping a red light. The cyclest being cocky basically ran rings around the police officer who dug his hole deeper and deeper due to frustration (officer wanted to fine him, but the cyclest was unwilling to cooperate based on the fact the police officer would have to arrest him..which he could not do as he had no physical proof that he jumped a red light). The problem I had with the vid was that both cyclest and police officer came over as total cocks. And the cyclest conviniantly left out the camera footage that showed him jumping, or not jumping the red light...which had he left in my opinion of him, and the police officer might have been very different.

Sonofthewinds.. not the first to try the leaflet thing out. I know my self and someone else did it at one point but it causes conflict issues which I would rather avoid so I stopped doing it.

It was the BMW cutting him up/brake checking after he leafleted and then he got off and started moaning at people outside a cafe/restaurant.Not a video camera cyclists finest hour I'd say

I recall that one very well. A very good reason to never confront a driver as it clearly makes matters worse.

I've taken quite an interest in the subject in recent weeks for no reason other than 3-4 threads on here, and some specific comments from individual posters, caught my attention. Consequently I've become more aware of the whole culture.

I don't feel camera cyclists look for trouble however I still have reservations about certain actions.

The bulk of videos seem to include nothing more than every day incidents which are then posted with an air of self-righteousness.

Despite claims to the contrary I have a feeling some videos which purport to be aimed at outing motorists are actually being played to a cyclist audience for some form of kudos

I've watched one video where poor cycling lead to a close overtake and the driver then being confronted at the next lights by three cyclists. The rider created the incident yet the driver was held up as in the wrong.

One rider spoke of buying a camera after 15 incidents in 6 months. My reaction in these circumstances would be to question what I was doing - not my ability but looking to make changes to avoid the problem. A video record of being run down us no help if your in hospital with a broken leg or worse.

My overall feeling is the You Tube outings and police reports do nothing to improve driving standards and cyclist safety. HOWEVER I think the camera cyclists can play a valuable role but currently mis-direct their message.

The majority of camera riders seem good experienced cyclists riding in quite challenging situations. Why not use the experience and footage to educate fellow cyclists? This would be addressing important issues to an appreciative audience rather than simply publishing video to out drivers when no one, other than a few cyclists, really cares.

That the message constantly appears to be about outing drivers rather than educating cyclists leaves me questioning the motivation behind the whole idea.

Without wishing to dig at Gaz the need to create the thread is another example of the self-justification which seems to run through the culture.

Use your undoubted talents - on bike and camera - to educate fellow cyclists not persue errant motorists. I've learnt a great deal on many subjects on the MB. I feel the camera guys could take it to another level but currently miss the opportunity.
