More accurately, the first ‘gyratory traffic flow system’ built in the UK and was originally designed as a refuge for pedestrians to help them cross a three-road intersection. It took many years before they could convince drivers to actually all go round it in the same direction.

It seems the initial article, that suggested the innovation turning them into the roundabouts we're used to, Mr Blackmore's scheme which clarified who should yield, wasn't wrong.

Sadly most people in the UK drive too fast onto and around them so other people joining have to stop rather slow to join which prevents the flow of traffic on, round and off so that one idiot stops everyone...

And that's why so many roundabouts are now controlled by traffic lights

In Europe and the US, yes.... in the UK we give way to traffic approaching from the right.
