Coogon is the only character actor, the others just play themselves.

Can't stand any of them

If it's who's professional work is the best - Coogan.

Who would you go to the pub for a drink with - Kay.
I've met Kaye and was impressed by how unimpressive he is. In real life, he's a curmudgeonly auld misery guts who seemed to take real pleasure in putting people down. And as far as I know, he doesn't drink and you'll almost never see him inside a pub.

It's true that Kay doesn't drink, and that's fine, but advertising John Smith's when booze killed your old man is pretty poor.

I think it was Frank Skinner* who told the story of being asked to advertise a brand of lager. When he told them he was an alcoholic and didn't drink, they said "Oh, don't worry Frank, you won't have to drink it, we'll just put something non-alcoholic in the glass!"

Spectacularly missing the point.

As for the others, I quite like Coogan but I suspect a lot of his appeal is really down to Armando Ianucci, who I do really like. I admire Gervais for his attitude that he'll do what he wants and if the producers don't like it he's happy to just walk away. Although his comedy is rather tedious and repetitive. He just does the same thing over again. And what's more, he repeats himself a lot. Phoenix Nights was good but apart from that Kay is a dullard whose routine just consists of naming things from the 1980s. Who remembers Rubik's cubes?

*Might have been someone else I can't properly remember, but you get the gist.

Gervais is a very talented comedian and writer. I loved the Office, he also gave us Karl Pilkington and that amazing show 'Derek'. If you haven't seen his sketch with Karl Pilkington 'English Lesson', I would highly recommend it.

You probably wouldn't. Kay is rude and completely up himself. He was very rude to a lady I know well when she was checking him in on a flight, for no reason that she could see. He was very rude to another friend who is the landlord of a pub that Peter Kay went to, had the barmaid in tears with his comments.

In that case Mrs Stephec's luck's in, I'll get her a bottle of milk stout instead then.

A lot of dislike for Gervais. I wonder how much of his success as a writer is down to Steven Merchant and the production team on the Office. I still think he should be commended for saying the unspeakable especially to US audiences.

Kay doing stand up is a bit one trick, nostalgia pony, but Phoenix Nights is still brilliant.

Coogan gets my vote. Although I think the whole trip idea with Brydon is getting a bit tired now.

Going back in time then it has to be the Marx bros for me. With special mention for WC Fields.
