Tour rider? Yes.

I meant British but I'd agree with British Tour rider. I think Simpson had some very good Classics victories and rides, plus track stuff.

I shall devote some time to that link you posted. I always enjoyed listening to Millar being interviewed.

I love watching that documentary.

The interviews with his team mates are quite revealing. And add to his value as a person and a rider IMO.

Millar didn't do so well in the Tour, despite the spotty shirt and a couple of stages.

Is that not enough?????

Millar still remains the only British rider to have won a major Tour Classification. He also won KOM in the Giro and finished 2nd the highest placing for a British rider. The Vuelta was within his grasp but was not to be.

..Daniel Cadden who stood up for the rights of cyclists on road, despite being bullied by the authorities and who, at high personal cost of stress & worry, saw it through to two court cases and did us all a huge favour that most of us will never be aware of.

There's more, but they'll do for a start.

Thanks for reminding me, I'd go along with that.

Sporting heros are a different category, but I'd like to nominate our cycling olympians, including the coaching staff.

Ray Dare came out of retirement to ride in the S.C.C.U. 100 on July 27th and recorded a time of 5.15.44. This broke the existing National Vets record for an 82 year old, set in 1980 by A.V. Mason, by 57m 44s. It's Ray's only time trial this year and he entered having decided about four weeks before to support the event. The next sighting of Ray will be at the CTC Birthday Rides and after that, it's back to the 40 Plus and the S.W. London Section of the CTC. Ray started cycling with his parents as a 9 year old with the local CTC Section and has ridden his bike ever since, apart from a two year break when he was working abroad. We'll miss his name on the result sheets but wish him many more years of trouble free cycling.

What it doesn't say is that in the year before Mr (to you) Dare broke 5 hours for the 100 - the fastest time for an 80-something. Mr. Dare will probably ride the Cheam and Morden Hilly 50

The last time I met up with Mr. Dare was in Shere. It was a foul day. Rain was falling in stair rods and we decided to pack it in and go home. I zipped off to Dorking and the train. My hero went over White Down.

Then there's Pete Mitchell. 13,000 miles a year. Not bad for a 75 year old.
