Why are bikes so collectable?

I have neither the room nor the money for yet another bike so why do I keep scouring ebay and the like for a vintage racer?

I've even been looking at BMX/DJ type bikes as well

I know it's n+1 and all the rest of it but even so, what the hell is wrong with me?

Same reason I've got about 30 film cameras I'll never get round to using. They're just so damn cool.

you need to step back, take some deep breaths and have a good hard think. I've ditched my latest project and am planning to swap out the one old frame I have for a new one. I don't like quill stems, downtube shifters and threaded headsets. Old steel frames are nice enough but incompatability, and sourcing parts, is a pain in the bum. If you get a new paint job as well you can easily find you've exceeded the price you'd have paid for a new steel frame. They're also not lightweight, a 'legendary' 531c frame will run at a bit over 4lbs in weight, excluding forks.

Not that I've been thinking about this or anything:biggrin:

I spent a lot of money on refurbishing a 1983 Flying Gate replica.

  • Out with the quill in with the quill to ahead converter.
  • Moved the cantilever bosses to accommodate 700c wheels
  • New head set
  • Re-routing of internal cable runs.
  • Respray and gold lining of lugs.
  • New transfers.
Still came in at half the cost of a new frame. Furthermore it built up into a nice bike which attracts lots of attention and favourable comments. It's been my main Audax bike since May and has proved to be a very comfortable ride.

At my weight a pound or two on the frame is unnoticed.

1. It's a mechano thing. You can build it with handtools and mostly it won't explode.

2. Your brain is hardwired to hunt and gather. Aka n+1

People at colelge think I'm nuts... "why do you need two bikes??" can't wait till I get enough space for a third...

I saw a vintage L'Hirondelle on Ebay a few months ago which was absolutely gorgeous. I didn't bid, then owner contacted me & said it was going to be relisted. I hung back & exbid but just missed it. It had one of those beautiful chain guards but only single speed. It just looked so pretty - yet how would I have explained yet ANOTHER bike?
