Why are British hotels so unremitingly crap?

The real sadness, and you had no way of knowing this, is that the Redwood hotel is adjacent to some outstanding mountain bike trails. If you find yourself staying in the area again, bring your bike and give me a shout!
Love too, apart from I don't have an MTB ... but I can bring the roadie. I work often out of our facility at Portbury dock but usually commute back to Abbers, but if you get 3 days in a row an overnight helps the sleep!
I'd be happy to hook up for a ride and a pint!
Ooh! Count me in on that. In a couple of weeks we'll be living a stone's throw from the docks.
Excellent, would be nice to hook-up if only for a social.
That great, next few weeks don't look good, 2 weeks in Russia and then potentially Thailand, but I'll let you, my schedule changes daily so I'll let you know as soon as I know :becool:

I used to work in the Portbury industrial estate...

Anyway, there's some nice road riding from that area down the lanes into north Somerset. I can usually arrange an evening ride with a bit of notice.

I do think that once you pay £200 a night in this country then unless you're unlucky you will get something fairly special. My personal favourite is the White Vine House in Rye in East Sussex. Me and SWMBO go as often as we can afford to.

Crikey - for £200 a night I'd expect a 'Bobby Moore' thrown in!

Seriously, I don't consider myself to be a pauper but other than my wedding night, I cannot conceive every spending that sort of money for a bed & breakfast for 1 night. To me, £200 is still quite a lot of money.

This is probably the worst hotel in Britain:

The reviews make it sound exactly like some of the holes I had to stay in while travelling around Nigeria before South African investors like Protea Hotels came in and bought them all up.

My worst hotel experience in the UK was at the hands of Best Western, who seem to buy only failing hotels, do some window dressing then continue to rip off the public.
