Why do cars have indicator....

Best indicators were on old escorts and fords, the earth connections were always crap so when an indicator was switched on, the whole set of lights on both sides used to flash in random sequences.

But you couldn't miss it, and you knew that it was turning one way or the other!

I try not to rely on indicators as posted folk tend not to use them. What is a bit annoying is when you are waiting patiently for a gap and somebody suddenly pulls off, if they'd indicated you could have been on :-(
At the opposite end of the spectrum are the cars (volvos I think) which have little amber lights always on; a few times  I thought oh sh1t they're going to pull out.

I don't like cars with the indicators that flash really quickly, I guess it's a visible as a slower flash I just don't like it.

I guess it's better than no indicators.

What really sums indicators, or rather drivers' lack of understanding of them and their purpose, is the common complaint.

"I hate cyclists because they never indicate WHILE they are turning"

Of course not, we are usually busy turning

Completely missing the point that indicators (or hand signals) are to signal an intention to turn prior to the event, not turn the wheel with the finger stuck out so that it catches the stalk to give one flash half way around the corner

Madone - It was just before the arctic spell - no no ice on roads, perfectly clear day, and just one car driver that forgot that 6"6 cyclists on the window make rather an impression.... jeez she was shaken up about it - more so than me..

Yeah, same happened to a friend of mine, who had two lights on front, red on back, hi-vis, ankle clips reflector things, and flashing valve caps...

I recently saw something (may have been another VW) where the indicators were a circle around the outside of the stoplights. Was a bright sunny day & the orange 'merged' into the red stoplight. Car may have been an orange tone too which probably didn't help. Commented to MrsK who had to look twice to see that it was flashing.

i think its just starting to become the fashion now adays lol its a really stupid design and should be banned

I live in a village where tw@ts vehicle drivers turn left off a main road and up a small slip road onto another road. Trouble is they do this at speed (a lot more that the 30mph limit) and my road end joins the smaller road at that point. They do all this with no indication whatsoever.

I change my driving style to compensate for clueless pillocks with little or no regard for other road users.

I believe that some motorist don't indicate for the same reason that indicating a left-turn on a bike is not necessarily a good idea, ie it encourages other road users to pull-out on you or cut you up. Of course, in the main, it's because motorists can't be arsed.

More likely to be the latter than the former by 100-1, methinks.

Yep it's a Passatt - I've noticed the indicators are crap in the day, or when the brake lights are on
