That's your problem PAT ... I get it all the time .. I often hear the words %@#*#$(inaudible) - Arse - @#*%(inaudible) ... I always catch the word ARSE, but never the word "NICE" or "STUD" mainly because they've passed by by then

My guess, and I'm only going on what you've written, is that your fellow road users are well versed in the correct techniques to be employed by cyclists approaching a junction, and wish to express their admiration of your exemplary execution of the manoevre.

On the other hand, most women tend to downplay the attractiveness of their bums, so I'm not ruling that explanation out entirely.

Whichever is right, their hooting is clearly meant as a compliment - however cackhanded - so a quick thumbs up behind your back will be more than enough to thank them.

Who knew the Scots were so chivalrous!

Update: I heeded your suggestion. I'm now keeping left on exiting my housing scheme into the main road, taking the right lane a few meters later than I used to. Don't get beeped anymore!
Wee problem is, I don't trust them to let me pass into the right lane, as the road is a fast one, goes round a bend just after I join it. So I stop at a hard shoulder, filtering bit, where I can actually see what's coming, join the right lane when safe. problem solved!

Sounds good. Have to let the motorists get their own way,now and again, and it sounds like you are doing the best thing by riding safely.

Talking about getting old maturing, I walking down the street with a mate the other day and a very nice looking young lady rode by on a bike.
I know she was very nice looking because my mate told me so.
To my eternal shame all I was thinking at the time was "that's a nice bike, carbon forks too...."

The same thing happens to me when I'm out with the wife. If she sees me looking at a girl on a bike she knows I'm looking at the bike!! Get me pipe and slippers matron!!

Sometimes you have to learn the best way to deal with an individual junction - I sometimes have problem ones if I'm going uphill and want to turn right (I'm sooooo slow up hill - sometimes 5mph would be good for me up hill!), and so in one case I take a slightly different route so that I do the hill on a side road and then don't have the problem right hand turn at the top. Or if I do I aim to get there when the lights are red so that I can filter forward to the ASL and get into the right position.
