Apart from the few 'fags' i had as a teenager .I have never never wanted to smoke .I could never see the point .I suffered from Asthma and Bronchitis as a young 'un .So it would have been like commiting suicide if i had carried on .

Because today i am one of four people who are decorating a blokes front room .A smoker ,his flat was yellow .We washed the walls and ceiling down before we started painting .My missus said she was nearly sick with the smell .His double glazed windows were actually white ,after we had washed them down also .

People actually pay good money to do this to their bodies .

As a former smoker, I'll answer this. When I first started having the odd fag it was at the same time as having a pint. The two together increased the effects of the drink, and thus it felt like I was getting drunk quicker. I also enjoyed the taste, particularly the higher tar cigarettes and cigars.

I gave up about 5 years ago. I knew it wouldn't do my long term health any good, so I stopped. I do still miss some things about smoking, but wouldn't go back to it.

The first one is just to see what it's like (I did that)
The second one is because of the first (fortunately I didn't do that)
The rest are because of the first 2.

I have never smoked, but was subjected to it as a kid by parents who did smoke. Sadly my mum died of cancer, and my dad is now plagued with ill health.

It stinks, it's anti-social and damages people's health, and not just that of the smoker either.

Here we go.............the non smokers and the PC brigade, getting all sanctimonious.

I smoked for most of my life, from the age of about 14, because back then it was he thing to do and the effects were not researched as much as they are now.

I cig' has kept my sanity in many a stressful situation.

I was addicted and had been for 48 years, 30 a day. I enjoyed it, and whilst I had tried to stop seriously a couple of times, I always went back to them.

Christmas 2008, I had a stinking cold, got home from the bar, watched a bit of TV and at midnight (early for me, then) decided to have my final cig before bed. I took one drag, thought it tasted fowl, put it out and haven't touched one since. I've had no cravings, nothing, it's like I've never smoked. I admit I was in the state of mind for packing it in, but with the wife still puffing away, thought it a waste of time even trying again. But, hey presto, I've now been smoke free for 21 months.

It doesn't bother me people smoking around me and never have a desire to have a 'drag'.

Baring in mind that I live in Spain, where the anti smoking lobby has a lesser voice than in the UK, so the smaller bars and restaurants have the choice to be either smoking or non-smoking establishments, provided they display clearly which they are.

Adults then are able to make their own choice, and the ability to make up their own minds. Not like the UK where you are being told what to do, and choices being forced upon you.

I digress.........

I know what it's like to smoke don't ever think that it's easy to give up, I was just so incredibly lucky.

Why do people smoke..............??????????????

Why do people drink, it's just as harmful to health, both yours and others, so why is that not treated in the same derisory way ?

Creak as I leave the dizzy heights of my soapbox...............

Knowing the harm it does, it really gets my goat to see a girl/woman pushing a pram, take a drag then lean over and belch the vile fumes at the kid?

What chance or choice does the child have?

None.

They are a victim of their parents selfish, ignorant mindset.

I smoked for 20 years. Peer pressure got me into it. Then before you know it you are an addict. I stopped three years ago. Motivation to stop, my kids, my health, my wallet, personal hygiene etc etc the list is long. Do I miss it hell yeah. Do I want to go back no.

I'm probably like swee'pea in that I smoke sometimes but I doubt if I have more than half a dozen a year. I also buy packs for people if I have had a few off them, because of the price of cigs now.
