I also live apart from my wife, who works in a city roughly a thousand miles from where we live. I know some would say that's a good thing, but for us just having enough to pay the bills without living apart would contribute greatly to our happiness.

Says the sweaty

Oi I'm not a sweaty, I just live up here.

lives in the tropical paradise of East Lothian! Doesn't that conjure up an image of days and days of never-ending sunshine and tranquil peace we can only dream of?

And you would be right with that image conjured up, view from my garden:

When I win millions on the lottery, I'll by a few nice cars, go on expensive holidays, stay in the best hotels, purchase extravagant watches, drink copious amounts of champagne, surround myself with beautiful yet vacuous young women, buy loads of bikes, expensive suits that I'll never wear and eat in expensive restaurants all the the time.

Then I'll squander the rest.

We have our very own local Euromillions winners. Colin and Chris Weir won £161 million.

Sadly I don't know them personally, but as you can imagine they are frequently the talk of the town. The tabloid trolls have unsuccessfully tried to find any dirt on them. It seems they are a thoroughly decent couple who have done a lot of good for the town. They have sponsored several young locals with sporting potential including a tennis player and a racing driver. They bailed out the famous Clyde based paddle steamer Waverly, which operates at a loss most years. They financed the installation of a quality astro-turf pitch for our local football club. The local Suzuki car dealership seems to have done rather well out of them! No Aston Martins or other exotica, they're just not interested. They have of course moved to a larger house in the nearby countryside, and local trades people have done well out of all the ongoing work being done.

So it would be fair to say that their win has changed their lives for the better, and also the lives of a lot of other people, either directly or indirectly.

IIRC there was some proper research a few years ago which found that that is typical - most winners still live relatively modestly, improve the lives of many people around them and are happier than they were before.

Thanks but no thanks. I think I'll pass.
Money doesn't make you happy but it helps

This is a very good point. Before I divorced I was in a little gang of 3 couples. We did all the usual things, pubs, restaurants, weekends away etc.
One of the couples had a very successful business and were significantly financially better off the rest of us (3 nurses and 1 fireman). Though they had a bigger house and snazzier cars than us, they basically had the same social life as us as they had to go to places that we could afford!
So I always said, that their big piles of money made little difference, because their lives were the same as ours anyway!

No Their lives weren't the same. They were considerably richer than you!

all i want is enough to pay off my mortgage , make sure the kids can do Uni without being saddled with a debt the size of a small african nation , and a new carbon bling bike.

then the rest can go to RNLI , Cancer research , Alzheimers society and macmillan nurses in equal share. I will still go to work because I , despite protestations to the contrary, do actually like it.
